This is a great book and a great referance for scouting. I think it is unfair to rank this book so low because someone bought the wrong book. My son reads his everyday.

I got a forgotten edition in the early nineties, and I loved it as a scout. When I had a son last year I was doing some mushy research and romanticizing about how awesome I will raise my kid and at the same time happened across this book and bought it. I read through it reminiscing for myself and dreaming about my son. I have to say this edition was better than the one I had all those years ago, there are no color photos but the actual book is so much richer in content.

This is not something anyone who wants to raise a boy - not one of those androgynous unisex pansies the world seems to want these days, but a real boy - should miss. I love this book, and I guarantee if you have a son, you will love it too!

It should have kept the old style cover, as it can confuse those who don't read the small print (they did use the old / orig one in 2010 for the 100th anniversary). BUT the info is great, shows where it all began, and the skills and knowledge is often useful today. You DO need a current Scout Handbook as well, as things have changed. This is historical and shows boys (and Dads and Moms and perhaps daughters, as the Girl Scouts/Girl Guides - England- trace their story to these roots)that they are only the latest in a long tradition, and will recognize much still taught as coming from the first Scouts and Lord Baden Powell himself, the founder of it all. I am a 20+ year Scouter, and found it of great use, with some practical use too. Boys and leaders need a reasonably new (er) BSA Handbook, Leaders a Scoutmasters Handbook, and there are many on line training programs at BSA HQ. This book gives the origen of the essence of Scouting, principles and many skills useful still. Get it and see how the journey began.

I was pretty disappointed when I got the book. I thought it was the current handbook. I suppose I should have read the description more closely. But it had a recent copyright date and the picture of the cover is very modern looking, very deceptive. I'm not sure why anyone would want a boyscout handbook from the early 1900's, I read through a little bit and due to modern technologies, most of the information is obsolete. If you are looking for a quaint piece of nostalgia, buy it, if you need a handbook for your scout, look elsewhere.

shame on me or shame on the publisher, you decide. My son lost his Boy Scout handbook, you know, the one that you sign off your merit badges and rank advancements in and I ordered this and it is a Boy Scout book alright just not the one we needed. Great information but the title is misleading. The seller is not to blame and as a matter of fact delivered the product quickly and at a fair price.
