Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A pediatric geneticist at Montefiore Hospital in New York City, Marion has intimate knowledge of caring for children with congenital malformations. In this selection of striking cases encountered in his career, he emphasizes the resilience of the human spirit that "cuts obstacles down to size" and provides humbling, as well as learning, experiences for medical practitioners. Marion's patients range from children born with grotesqueries (e.g., one child is faceless) to the boy of the title, diagnosed with hereditary sensory neuropathy, a condition that prevents him from feeling pain. These 14 moving and inspiring accounts show an empathetic doctor interacting with patients and their families, about whom he writes, "The parents of children born with some congenital malady or syndrome are not the same people they were prior to that birth."

From School Library Journal

YA-- Fourteen accounts of treating children with unusual medical problems. Readers meet a boy without any pain, children with strange eyes, a baby without a face, and a boy with breathing difficulties who was left at the hospital to die by his parents. (He survived, but they never returned.) This is a lively, intriguing account of hospital life by an engaging, compassionate doctor who shows his humanity by readily admitting his mistakes as an intern. A fascinating book for students planning to go into the medical field, as well as an excellent guide to being a genuinely sympathetic physician.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a Great Book for Information and Understanding, May 16, 2008

I happened upon this book purely by accident. It was given to me at a 'white elephant' book enchange. I set it aside on my table for a long time and read it today only so I could pass it along at another book exchange tomorrow. This is a Great Book! I'm keeping it!

I am a nursing student. The names of some of these conditions are very familiar to me. During my nursing studies, I memorized these symptoms, treatments, and effects to do well on my exams. Dr. Marion's book, however, has deepened my understanding and broadened my knowledge immeasurably. From now on, when I come across individuals and information related to these conditions, I will be remembering the stories of these children, their families, and the very human physician who cared for them.

This is a great book for anyone who wants to go into the health care field. Its such an easy read, one which you wont want to put down. Each story is a chapter, and he does a great job of not confusing the reader with technical jargon. Great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A doctor who actually cares., September 6, 2002

This book walks you through some of the experiences of a pediatric geneticist. Be prepared to "feel" as you read this book, because it will evoke thoughts, feelings and emotions. It makes you realize that for some doctors, thier job is more than a job. For some doctors, thier job is a constant life lesson, and for the rest of us, we can vicariously learn these lessons through the eyes of Dr. Marion.
