Editorial Reviews

Review

“Nackman has the looks and drive to perform his tuneful ballads at One Tree Hill’s Peach Pit After Dark.” --Time Out New York, March 2005

Product Description

The release of Alex Nackman's, A BOY WHO THOUGHT HE KNEW, is culmination of nearly 9 months of studio work with produer David Shaw (Van Morrison/Jerry Garcia/Etta James) and Alex's band. However, the release is also part of the continuation of nearly 5 years writing, touring, promoting, and recording. Armed with this 12-track LP effort (Alex's 3rd record), Nackman truly shows a level of maturity and confidence that has impressed critics from Los Angeles to London, and attracted the eyes and ears of fans from all over the world. The title itself refers to Alex's thinking that he may have known the right paths to take to achieve success, when in reality the straight path or the common path may not be the right one. As Alex explains, "Perhaps high school to college to med-school may not actually lead one to become a successful physician." Experiencing the ups and all too frequent downs of the music industry has allowed Alex to see a clearer picture as what works and what doesn't. These new songs show a level of growth and insight, in terms of musical writing, that is astounding. In addition, the songs take on real issues that are relatable, yet also very personal. A BOY WHO THOUGHT HE KNEW includes guest performances from drummer Fred Berman (of Amos Lee's band) and former Ray Charles bassist Steve Beskrone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Diverse and listener friendly, June 18, 2006

I've been able to relate to Alex Nackman's music because he's very real lyrically. "A Boy" is a very cool disc with a lot of diversity between tracks. I personally like the second half of the CD, which is a little more somber, with hints of Lennon-esque chord progessions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong album, GREAT performer, September 29, 2005

I've experienced Alex Nackman more at his live performances than on his albums, having seen him 2 times in L.A. The guy just connects in every way, with very strong songs. I got this album A BOY WHO THOUGHT HE KNEW and downloaded his others at iTunes. The new one is a terrific disc with 12 well-produced and strongly performed tracks. It's a CD that shows a ton of maturity. AN is only 21, but his lyrics have a lot of years behind them. I hear some Paul McCartney in the disc at times, which is a good thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really excellent CD, September 5, 2005

I work at an indie label in Tennessee. I found Alex Nackman at [...]searching around a bit. I saw him play in Nasville this summer and loved the music. The new CD "A Boy" is a great collection of well-crafted and well-written songs. They cover a lot of ground in that some are more pop, others are more rock. Towards the end of the CD, the songs get a little more heavy, which is kind of a nice darker side of AN. I think the only negative aspect to the disc is the arrangement of one song, "Waiting Home." The song is very cool and different, but it has an odd form--I guess you've gotta experiment sometimes though. The whole CD is terrific and it's down the ally for anyone into lyrically driven acoustic rock with an edge.
