A Quality Album, December 18, 2008

I took a chance on this album--I liked Curious Phantasm and didn't know much else--and was pleasantly surprised. It's definitely one of the best albums I've heard this year.
The catchy songs, the layered style that's simultaneously cacophonous and melodious--that was nice to hear, but it wasn't a huge surprise. What makes this album outstanding is how artfully written it is. I feel that when you try to write an album about the different stages of life there's a good chance it will come off boring or trite, but this does not. True Men Like You Men about children among adults, Appalachia about an old man losing his memory, Curious Phantasm looking back on a completed life, and Suburban Sprawl, which wonderfully captures the desperation of a midlife crisis--these are some of the highlights of the album.
I'd say take a chance on this album. It's different and it's great.

For one thing, this is not mainstream pop. If you like songs with one melody defining a song, this is not for you.
Nevertheless, this is an incredible album made with incredible skill and devotion.
