This is a marvelous compilation of every person and place near and dear to the Houston music scene in The Days. If you are curious about the prodigious talents and promoters of the time, this volume will bring it all back home. A chewy must-read documenting the birth of Texas rock, folk and psychedelia.

What a great gathering of history from the '60's from the Houston area. Having grown up not far from the Catacombs we were there as often as possible. Knew several of the bands. Great to know what went on behind the scenes and hear some of the stories.

such an interesting read! I had no idea so many in the music industry had their start in the garage bands of Houston. I just thought all kids in America had such wonderful opportunites and gifts! Must be the water!

Just received my copy of this book a couple of days ago and am really enjoying this "trip" back. Love the large print especially for those of us at that are of the age to directly experience the music on the Third Coast during those days !!! Boys of Houston has already stirred up so many great (and some not so) memories of not only the bands and venues that are covered here but also the "Feel" of those times growing up here in the Houston area. I have several friends that are eager to see the book when I decide to let go of it.
If you know someone whose life was impacted by Houston's local music in the '60s and early '70's, or someone that just wants to know about those heady days, this is a great gift to consider !

I found Boys from Houston interesting, informative, and entertaining. For those of us who weren't there, the pictures help to make it real and provide a sense of the experience. Reading this book was time well spent. I am sharing it with friends and plan to purchase a copy for my local library.

When I received this book, I was reading Keith Richards book 'Life' and had just gotten 'Shell Shocked' by Howard Kaylan of Turtles fame. Well, those two books are going to have to wait as I cannot put down 'Boys from Houston'. I know how much time and effort and heart she put into it as
this book dives right in, and I don't need my glasses to read it. Richards spends way too much time on his childhood, and the book on the Turtles is supposed to be a riot. But they both will have to wait until I finish Ms. Ayo's book. I was a part of this scene, and there are so many facts that I was unaware of, or had forgotten. It is so hard to go hear other bands when your own band is playing all the time. As a teenager, I felt jealousy and envy toward other bands, but as I grew older, I really began to admire other good bands, mostly when they were on the same venue we were playing. This book makes me appreciate these people even more, and shows how parallel their travels and travails were to my group's experiences. We were on the Larry Kane Show quite often, and there is extensive mention of that. Some reviews I have read apparently expected a work comparative to Tolstoy. The quality of writing is like sitting on a back porch with an old friend reminiscing during a rain shower. The negative mention of the graphics in this book are ridiculous. How many of you have scrapbook pictures or items that are 40-50 years old that are photo ready for publishing, or could even be brought to those high standards? I would rather see an old newspaper clipping mentioning my group, or others, in sub-standard quality than not at all! Polaroids don't pass the effects of age either.

I read the Boys From Houston "straight through" and having lived in the Houston (Pasadena) area for many years, I did know many of the groups that Vicki wrote about. I enjoyed reading about all of them and knew some of the people she wrote about.
