4.0 out of 5 stars Eclectic mix of imaginitive gay short films
This is an entertaining collection of 7 short films that range in length from 8 to 30 minutes each. This helps so that you don't have to endure too much of the bad ones - but the good news is only a few of them are bad. Most are very good and offer an electic mix (quirky, humourous, erotic, etc.). 2.0 out of 5 stars I didn't love it
Well, I live in New York. I attend the film festivals. I go to art cinemas. So I took a chance. In the fewest of words, this simple is nothing you would want to own. Fine, rent it. It's amusing at best. It always amazes me that all the effort, money and time it takes to make one of these shorts and yet you find yourself thinking, "huh?" The best of the...

4.0 out of 5 stars Eclectic mix of imaginitive gay short films, October 4, 2000
This review is from: The Best of Boys in Love (DVD)
This is an entertaining collection of 7 short films that range in length from 8 to 30 minutes each. This helps so that you don't have to endure too much of the bad ones - but the good news is only a few of them are bad. Most are very good and offer an electic mix (quirky, humourous, erotic, etc.). Going from the best to the worst - 1) "Death In Venice, CA" - The longest of the seven, this is a touching story of an older man in love with his landlady's gorgeous teenage son (that's him on the box). Part "Lolita" and part "Death In Venice", this is a very well acted and directed story of desire, longing and regrets. 2) "Karen Black Like Me" is a hilarious spin off of the classic tv film "Trilogy of Terror" in which Karen Black is chased around her apartment by a vicious warrior doll. In this parody, a queeny young guy has the same fate not with a doll but a giant dildo! Imaginitive and hilarious, it also features a nice cameo by Anita Gillette as the bitchy mother. 3) "Achilles" is an animated claymation retelling of the myth of Achilles and his lover Petroclus. This one is very well done and surprisingly erotic. 4) "Twilight of the Gods" is a black and white feature depicting the relationship between a Maori native and a wounded European soldier. This one is also very erotic but violent as well. 5) "Boot Camp", a funny little stint involving a gay leather bar crossed with a Hollywood musical, 6) "Dirty Baby Does Fire Island" is a mildy humorous gag involving an animated baby doll subjected to sex and drugs on Fire Island, and 7) "SPF 2000", by far the worst of the lot, is a parody of badly dubbed Italian films. Unfortunately it is neither entertaining or very interesting. Overall, if you are a fan of short films, this one is well worth your time.

It's amusing at best. It always amazes me that all the effort, money and time it takes to make one of these shorts and yet you find yourself thinking, "huh?" The best of the collection were the black and white offerings, Boot Camp and Twilight of the Gods. From what I have read, Trevor, which is available separetly, was originally a part of this collection when shown in theaters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Synopsis, December 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Boys in Love 2 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"A high-quality, erotic and original short films - with some added hunor! Boys in Love 2, fresh from its theatrical release, features BOOT CAMP, a cross between a leather bar S/M fantasy and an RKO musical; TWILIGHT OF THE GODS, a subtropical period romance between a Maori warrior and a European soldier: KAREN BLACK LIKE ME, a weirdly funny homage to the 70's cult classic Trilogy of Terror: MY BODY, a laugh-out-loud tale about a neurotic but cute young man in denial about his sexual orientation; SPF 2000, a gay spoof of early 70's Italian sexploitation films; and last but certainly not least, DIRTY BABY DOES FIRE ISLAND, a spectacularly animated tale (with some very live action) of sex, drugs and debauchery at our favorite beach hangout! 86 Min color & B/W" - From Wolfevideo

5.0 out of 5 stars so bad it's funny, May 3, 2002
By

This review is from: The Best of Boys in Love (DVD)
If this is "The Best Of Boys In Love" I'd really hate to see the worst of boys in love. Some of these films are so bad you just laugh. And you're not laughing with them. You're laughing at them. "Boot Camp" is so stupid that you'll skip past it halfway through. It's a musical set up in a gay bar. It's funny for about 2 seconds. Then it's time to turn it off. "Dirty Baby Does Fire Island" is about a perverted baby doll that comes to life and enjoys watching men having sex. Weird. "SPF 2000" is about an alien that comes to earth to put suntan lotion on people's bodies. "Twilight of the Gods" is just boring. "Achilles" is ok. "Karen Black Like Me" is like a Saturday Night Live skit. It's about a monster dildo that attacks a queen. It's pretty funny. "Death In Venice, CA" is very good. It's a beautiful love story about a young 17 year old and an older man. It's the only reason why I'm giving this DVD 5 stars. The rest of the films are trash.

2.0 out of 5 stars I should have read the reviews, September 26, 2001

I purchased this video recently. I had been interested in it for a while, but had never really heard anything about it other than it was short films with gay themes. Aside from a few cute moments here and there, most of this video was just confusing, boring or down-right ridiculous. Next time I purchase, I will be reading others reviews first.

2.0 out of 5 stars TRASH TRASH TRASH, February 12, 2003
This review is from: The Best of Boys in Love (DVD)
I have always had an interest in short films. I rented this collection because of it's gay themed stories. I was sorely dissapointed with it's lack of decenlty told stories. Achilles is the only short on this DVD that could hold my attention for it's entire length. It was the story of Achilles and the death of his gay lover. It is told in claymation using statues that look like the characters in mythology. It is beautifully told and brought to life. Dirty Baby Does Fire Island was the only one that was amusing in any way. It shows a baby doll wash up on a beach and come to life. She begins to wander around Fire Island watching body builders pump iron, men having sex, and trying mind altering substances. It is kind of sick and twisted but amusing. It is hard to say what the other shorts were about becasue they were extremely unmemorable. One is titled SPF 2000, which looks like a Mystery Science Theatre 2000 reject. This woman and her son go to the lake to sunbath and these two gay guys start flirting with the son, then this alien shows up and starts spreading sun lotion on all of them. It was odd and made no sense. Karen Black Like Me is about a magical sex toy that tries to kill the man who owns it. Boot Camp is a short that takes place in a gay leather bar. It's a musical and dance sequence and it has no real story or plot. Twilight of the Gods is about a wounded war soldier who is nursed back to health by a native boy, and one thing leads to another and you know the rest. It is silent and extremely boring. Death in Venice, CA is the story of a man who goes to live with a widow woman and her stepson. The stepson has sex with older men and takes a liking to the man. It pushes him over the edge. It was a decent short but still nothing to write home about. Overall, this collection is not worth renting, much less owning.

The Best of Boys in Love is one of the worst items I've ever purchased. I should have read the reviews on either IMDB or Netflix first.

4.0 out of 5 stars The leather bar alone is worth it, July 14, 2004

This review is from: The Best of Boys in Love (DVD)
(...) I agree that the entire cd is not great but the "boy in leather" alone is worth watching this dvd if you are gay and had ever been in a leather bar in your life.
Baby does fire Island is comical for those who remember drugs and poppers. The Clamation piece is Excellent.
THe rest are so, so but in general I have shown these three shorts to dozens of friends and they have all raved.

Rent it first and then you decide.

This is all about DEATH IN VENICE, CA. It's the hot picture on the cover. The quotes they use on the box are about it. It's the reason to buy this DVD.

"This gay male shorts compilation includes the following: Twilight of the Gods (1995, 15 min) This Australian film from Stewart Main (co-director of Desperate Remedies is a tender, erotic tale of the poetic power of love when a relationship develops between an 1800s European soldier and a teenage Moari warrior. The stress of nine years of war between the Greeks and Trojans begin to destroy the relationship between the warrior and his loyal lover. Boot Camp (1996, 6 min) A courtship takes an unexpected turn from the rough-'n-tumble leather scene to the musical dance world of the 1930s in this priceless gem from John Scott Matthews. Also features the shorts "My Body", "SPF 2000" and "Karen Black Like Me." - Abstract from Pride Video
