From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up-- After two decades, Pomeroy, co-author of the Kinsey Reports, has rewritten and revised Boys and Sex and Girls and Sex in order to present thorough information in a framework of today's sexual mores. He gives clear, factual material on a wide variety of issues surrounding human sexuality, stressing the responsibility for and consequences of sexual behavior. The topics include AIDS, sexual identity, rape, prostitution, menstruation, masturbation, and a section of often-asked questions. The author presents extensive information about the human reproduction system, and he explains how the experience of sex can be different, at the emotional level, for males and females. He makes a concerted effort to keep his text neutral and factual. However, generalities abound, and there's no discussion of date rape or forcing oneself on an unwilling partner. Throughout, the style is lively, lucid, and easy to read. There are no diagrams or illustrations, but there is a full and clear index. Both books are highly readable and should be a part of well-balanced YA collections. --Doris A. Fong, Benson Polytechnic High School, Portland, OR
