Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up-- After two decades, Pomeroy, co-author of the Kinsey Reports, has rewritten and revised Boys and Sex and Girls and Sex in order to present thorough information in a framework of today's sexual mores. He gives clear, factual material on a wide variety of issues surrounding human sexuality, stressing the responsibility for and consequences of sexual behavior. The topics include AIDS, sexual identity, rape, prostitution, menstruation, masturbation, and a section of often-asked questions. The author presents extensive information about the human reproduction system, and he explains how the experience of sex can be different, at the emotional level, for males and females. He makes a concerted effort to keep his text neutral and factual. However, generalities abound, and there's no discussion of date rape or forcing oneself on an unwilling partner. Throughout, the style is lively, lucid, and easy to read. There are no diagrams or illustrations, but there is a full and clear index. Both books are highly readable and should be a part of well-balanced YA collections. --Doris A. Fong, Benson Polytechnic High School, Portland, OR

My review - Edit review
Pomeroy might have written an earlier 1959 edition of Boys and Sex. That book was well organized with anecdotal stories that illustrated the sexual issues boys commonly encounter while they are emerging into their own manhood. This edition was bizarre. Very confusing and too many words to explain a simple aspect of male sexuality. Plus, this edition condones homosexuality, bestiality, and just about guilts a boy into experiencing as much premarital sex as he can get.
In fact, he says that it is not healthy for a boy to just masturbate until marriage. He needs sex with someone else regularly to really learn it or he'll have sexual problems in marriage. In the 1959 edition, the author tells boys that masturbation is good and healthy, but he gave the great advice that he needs to masturbate with a method that imitates vaginal intercourse. That way, you'll be better ready for great sex with your wife when you get married. I did that and did it a lot and 32 years of marriage has been fantastic because of it. And I gave our 6 sons the same advice and great marriages they have. But, this edition of Boys and Sex was just wierd.

Back in the day, my parents weren't about to sit down and talk with me or my sister about sex. No way, no how. They gave me Boys and Sex and they gave my sister Girls and Sex. So the parents obviously recommended this series thirty-some odd years ago. Plus One right off the bat.

Boys and Sex is pretty dry - it was written by one of the Kinsey Report guys - but it is informative. I learned how to masturbate from reading this book! Of course, I am still haunted by some of the stranger sex things they outlined. I shiver when I see the head of a pin - you know what I'm talking about guys?! It's sort of like a porn site that only contains very detailed instructions. It won't get you off, but the knowledge it imparts is priceless.

My sex life is legendary and I credit this book for all of my success. In fact, my wife is so sexually sated she insisted I buy this book for her to read, just to understand whence all the immense pleasure comes. It sits on her night table to this very day. Of course, she hasn't had time to read too much of it - you know what I'm talking about guys?!

I cannot comment on how Girls and Sex affected my sister. That's just gross, dude.
