4.0 out of 5 stars Wine and History, October 28, 2011

This review is from: Boys Up North: Dick Erath and the Early Oregon Wine Makers (Paperback)
If you like Oregon Wine---and I do, and especially if you like Pinot Noir, as I do, and, if you'd like to know "how it all started", that is, how the Oregon Wine scene has rocketed to world recognition, "Boys up North" will provide you with the facts, some details, and even a few good stories at the same time!
The book is more about the "early Wine Makers" than it is about "Dick Erath" but both are covered in enough detail for anyone wanting to trace the early history (1960's) and the "explosion" onto the world market (1980's) of our very good (and now, very expensive) Pinot Noir Wines should read this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read, but a little too biased., July 13, 2011

This review is from: Boys Up North: Dick Erath and the Early Oregon Wine Makers (Paperback)
Boys Up North says it recounts the history of the origin of the wine industry in Oregon, and it does, but with a myopic bias. Dick Erath is a pivotal figure in the history of making the Willamette Valley a prestigious Pinot Noir wine region, but the single minded focus diminishes the work. One of the most alluring and unique elements of the pioneering wine society in Oregon is the uncommon degree to which all of the Founders openly shared thier knowledge, resources, and raw hard physical labor. Dick Erath is iconic and deserves his rightful place in the Pantheon of the industry founders, just not standing alone.
