A collection of ten orthodontic stories, these case studies from the offices of Dr. Samantha Wrighting each describe The Braced Experience. Meet a whole gallery of patients from Dr.Wrighting's practice: girls just beginning their orthodontic treatment and those looking back on it years after they're done with it, girls dealing with headgear and functional appliances and plain old braces too. The Braced Experience includes the stories: Best Friends - Teasing Lessons - My Nightbrace - School Dance Dreams - Holding On - Braces are Beautiful - Bunk HG HQ - The Girl of his Dreams - Reactions - In Another Orthodontist's Hands. [Because The Braced Experience involves some exaggeration and fantasy about orthodontic treatment it may be unsuitable for younger or particularly impressionable readers who have not visited an actual orthodontist.] The Braced Experience is the third book in the Dr.Samantha Wrighting-series from Intraoral Press (www.intraoralpress.com).
I was born and grew up in Michigan, but my husband and our two daughters moved to England years ago and that's where we live now. When my girls got to the age when they needed braces I started thinking a lot more about what it had been like for me when I had my braces, and so I started writing about that. I had braces for a long time and I struggled with them a lot, right at that age when teenagers struggle with so many other things too, so I have a lot to write about.
My stories aren't completely realistic. Instead I try to embody all the fears and embarrassment (and pleasure!), and all the mixed feelings that having braces can lead to in the exaggerations in my stories.
My books are mainly for readers who have already gone through the orthodontic experience and want to read about it again, as well as teens who are dealing with braces. I think they are too mature and confusing for younger readers who are getting braces, though maybe they are helpful to parents who want to understand some of what their children will be going through.
Most of my books star the same orthodontist, Dr.Samantha Wrighting. Some of what she does is very unconventional, but I like to think of her as the orthodontist we all would have wanted to have.
My books are all published by Intraoral Press.
