Book Description

December 3, 2007 078176369X 978-0781763691 Fifth, Plus Integrated Content Website

The thoroughly updated Fifth Edition of this landmark work has been completely overhauled to better represent the rapidly changing field of radiation oncology. This edition has an updated interior design including full-color throughout, and a new companion Website featuring the fully searchable text with all the images.

This comprehensive textbook provides an understanding of every aspect of radiation oncology—the natural history of cancer, the physical methods of radiation application, the effects of irradiation on normal tissues, and site-specific applications of radiation therapy either as a single modality or as part of a multimodality treatment program. This edition places greater emphasis on use of radiation oncology in palliative and supportive care as well as therapy. Six new chapters cover stereotactic irradiation outside the CNS; photodynamic therapy; radiation and gene therapy; prostate—intermediate and high risk; oncologic imaging/oncologic anatomy; and economics of radiation oncology. Other highlights include expanded coverage of new molecular biology and targeted therapies and greater emphasis on dose conformality, IMRT, IGRT, new radiation therapy delivery machines, radiosurgery, dose painting, and innovative brachytherapy.

Editorial Reviews

Review, M. Wisniewski, RT(T) in Training, New Haven, CT -- "I believe this book is the 'gold standard' of information in the field. Much of my research for written papers comes directly from Perez and Brady's book. As an added benefit, when you purchase a new copy, you get a special code which permits you to set up an online account with the publisher. That, in turn, allows you to view the entire book online (both text and images). The images and illustrations really add to my research papers. All-in-all, well worth the money."; 5 Stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource December 25, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I find this book to be a fantastic resource. I had been using primarily Gunderson and Tepper's textbook up until I bought this book. I would recommend P&B over G&T for several reasons:
1) P&B clinical chapters are much more focused on the need-to-know information, i.e. are much shorter and more readable while still containing the most important info
2) P&B includes much more practical treatment planning information on a technical level
3) P&B has great illustrations, all of which are accessible using their website after you buy the book. These illustrations (examples of field design, tables, graphs, etc) can then be easily cut-and-paste into documents for personal review, powerpoint presentation, etc.

All in all, I would highly recommend this book over Gunderson and Tepper and wish I'd been using this book during my residency.
