This review is from: Brahms: Piano Quintet, Op. 34 (Audio CD)
I don't know how Amazon priced this item. It is extortinately expensive.
Fortunately, the quality is outstanding. The now disbanded Quartteto Italiano really plucks your heartstrings by playing with almost feverish passion. On the piano side, compatriot Maurizio Pollini returns with equally emotionally committed performance. While the tempi for the movements are slower than, say, Andsnes's version with Artemis, the result is more full-blooded and highly-charged than that later version. I fully agree that this work is one of Brahms's greatest masterpieces. If you wish to obtain a wonderful version on stereo, probably this one still ranks the top despite some brilliant late comers.

Brams at its best,
This review is from: Brahms: Piano Quintet, Op. 34 (Audio CD)
Brahms Piano Quintet, Op. 34 is a classic... often relentless, at times brooding, and always a delight. I can't imagine any fan of classical music not having a copy of this piece in their collection.
If you don't have a recording of this wonderful music, I would highly recommned getting one. And, this album would be an excellent one to buy, I can find no fault in it. The music is extremely well played and recorded. Pollini is, as usual, excellent, as is the Quartteto Italiano. I listen to this album frequently, and it has never disapointed in any way. On reflection, I believe there may only be a half dozen classical albums I listen to more than this remarkable recording of Brahms at his best!

Simply the Best!,
This review is from: Brahms: Piano Quintet, Op. 34 (Audio CD)
Pollini is always wonderful. That record is simply the best performance of this wonderful work of Brahms!
The union of a virtuoso pianist with a quartet that plays with heart and prioritizes the "spirit" of the work, has become a perfect combination! I recommend |
