Fine Budget Brahms, November 19, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Brahms: Serenades Nos. 1 & 2 (Audio CD)
Dirk Joeres and his orchestra are hardly well-known names. Let's get it straight--they'll be unknowns for most listeners. But I borrowed this CD to listen at home and was pleasantly surprised to find that you don't have to break the bank to get good performances of Brahms's evergreen favorites. The orchestra is a small one but produces a requisitely warm and full sound in the First Serenade. They play with spontaneity and warmth, and the recording is a very good one. If you want the top of the line, Mackerras on Telarc is probably your best bet. But for the money, this Carlton Classics CD is hard to beat.

A great bargain recording of Brahms' lighter pieces, September 22, 2009
This review is from: Brahms: Serenades Nos. 1 & 2 (Audio CD)
I first came across this recording of Brahms serenades in an issue of Fanfare back in the early '90's. The reviewer considered it among the best he had ever heard of these pieces. When I first listened to it, I was anticipating something loud and powerful like the symphonies and at first I felt disappointed. I listened to it again and began to enjoy the music. This was the recording that encouraged me to explore Brahms' works for even smaller ensembles, namely, the chamber works.
Each time I play this CD, which I am doing now, I like it even more. I am a former teacher who appreciates anything or anyone that broadens my horizons. Dirk Joeres' performances are infectious and joyful. That reviewer for Fanfare was right, and at this price this recording is a steal.
