Joyous and genial readings,

This review is from: Brahms: The String Quintets (Audio CD)
I'm not quite sure I've really figured out who the Nash Ensemble is, who leads them, or even who belongs to them. No matter. They are certainly enduring, and if after forty years they can produce readings as fresh-sounding, genial, and open-hearted as these two Brahms Quintets, I hope they keep doing whatever it is they are doing. In general these are cheerful readings that aim at joy or depth, but that's fine in these particular works, which find Brahms in a positive frame of mind. I'm not sure I'd rank the Quintets as high as the two Sextets, but all four stand at the forefront of Brahms's most accessible chamber works.
Other recordings tend to be more intense than what we have hear, and often there's more individuality in the various voices. What the Nash Ensemble has going for it is exceptional unanimity, glowing beauty of tone, and a knockout recording. Congratulations all around -- this is English music-making at its vigorous, civilized best. |
