5.0 out of 5 stars A considerable achievment., May 27, 2000
This review is from: Brahms: The Violin Sonatas (Audio CD)
Brahms at the best of times can be difficult to portray adequately-the moods in his music change constantly and surprisingly-added to that most virtuoso violinists these days seem to overcharge everything-I'm particularly thinking of Anne Sophie Mutter's Beethoven that a good performance of this repertoire is not that easy to find-but not here:Pamela Frank and Peter Serkin play these with an incredible emotional warmth and a simplicity that I have not encountered elsewhere. They are also very alive to the great subtlety in this music and they are also very beautifully recorded. In short this is a considerable chamber music recital.

If you like comparing different versions of classical pieces grab a copy of this Frank/Serkin version of Brahms' Violin sonatas but if you just want to own one copy of Brahms Violin Sonatas get the Zukerman/Barenboim version (Deutsche Grammophon). Not only does the Zukerman/Barenboim version sound more solid, you get three additional Brahms pieces for the price of one CD.
