4.0 out of 5 stars Note the book's subtitle: "Beginning Braille"
As the other reviews note, this is a fun little book that teaches you the alphabet and numbers in (grade-1) Braille, with puzzles showing words in isolation.

But if you buy this, you should bear in mind that that doesn't go very far at all in teaching you to read the grade-2 Braille you'd find in the real world, which is full of contractions and punctuation using dot...

3.0 out of 5 stars Its an okay book but I'm sure there are better out there.
It is possible that I will be blind in a few years so I wanted to learn to read Braille. This book has great beginings however the "dots" are not raised and I don't want to learn to read braille by sight. Its an okay but it would be better if the whole book were in actual braille though.

But if you buy this, you should bear in mind that that doesn't go very far at all in teaching you to read the grade-2 Braille you'd find in the real world, which is full of contractions and punctuation using dot patterns that this book doesn't even mention.

If you are sighted and want to learn to read Braille, see the book "Handbook for Learning to Read Braille by Sight" or possibly even the book "Instruction Manual for Braille Transcribing", and also look around <www.brl.org> and <www.loc.gov/nls/>.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Place To Start, September 30, 2005
This review is from: Braille for the Sighted (Beginning Braille) (Paperback)
I think that this book gives one a good place to start learning braille.
However, like other reviewers have mentioned, this is *extremely* basic. The only raised dots on my copy were the alphabet on the back cover.
I think that an improvement to this book would be if there were some pages devoted to raised dots. That way, this book would be an even better and effective way to learn braille.

3.0 out of 5 stars good first book, August 9, 2005
This review is from: Braille for the Sighted (Beginning Braille) (Paperback)
This book is good for people who know nothing about braile. It only talks about braile grade 1. it sais nothing about braile grade two. Also none of the book is "raised" it is flat so you can't try to learn with your eyes closed. You have to look at it. Only get this book if you know nothing about braile.

This book is great for beginners and as the title says for people that can see. I got this book because I was intrigued by the braille that you see on elevators and everything. I really like learning languages and of course the basics is learning the alphabet. This book is great in helping you to do that. I went through the exercises and made flash cards of braille letters. After only a day, I know the braille alphabet which is all I wanted. If you want to learn just the basics of braille, then this is a great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Braille!, April 24, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Braille for the Sighted (Beginning Braille) (Paperback)
This is a fun book for anyone interested in exploring the world of Grade 1 Braille. The variety of activities to practice using the Braille is terrific. As a teacher of the visually impaired, I recommend the book to interested people that are looking for an overview of what Braille is and how it works.

The only "Braille" in this book is on the front and back cover. Sure it "shows" you the braille, but how do you learn braille without touching it? Hello?
