4.0 out of 5 stars The care, feeding and use of the human brain . . ., September 1, 2008
This review is from: Brain Brilliant (Hardcover)
As defined by AmyK, Brain Brilliant is about knowing "how your own brain and mind operate." She posits that if you know more about how "your brain functions and fires and the manner in which your mind assimilates and accommodates your experiences you can gain huge benefits." Her very readable and informative book goes about developing that thesis.

AmyK Hutchens is well qualified to discuss this topic with a bachelor of science degree from the University of Maryland, a masters degree from Johns Hopkins University, and a diverse life experience living and working in Washington, D.C., Shanghai, China, and London, England prior to founding AmyK International in Atlanta, Georgia. Amy is a member of Vistage (TEC International) and has served as a mentor for Georgia State University's International MBA program.

The book is "interactive" in that she enjoins the reader to participate in exercises and reading out loud. She explains that our brains react to questions rather than statements and that we are "sensory beings" experiencing our world through our own senses and filters. We remember through sensory associations, especially visual. Emotions attached to significant events also help our memory.

This short book provides the practical information we need to understand how we and our fellow humans function and view our world. Armed with this information, we can function more effectively as leaders and managers.

In addition to a clear, understandable explanation of how our brain functions and how that can be applied to our everyday lives, AmyK also gives us practical suggestions for how to live our lives in a way that supports brain health. For AmyK, the bottom line on protecting your aging brain is: "Use it, use it early, keep using it and use it often. Participate fully in life, interact with others, get involved stay mentally busy, stay physically active, eat right, reduce your stress levels, and be a life long learner. Your brain depends on an active mind."
This excellent book is a must read for those of us interested in understanding how to deal with resistance and reluctance to change, manage pressure in our lives, structure effective team meetings, develop positive relationships an d increasing our effectiveness as leaders while improving the bottom line of our businesses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fires and Wires!, January 17, 2003

About every five years or so, a business / improvement book will be written, that actually contains original thought.

There is nothing ordinary about Brain Brilliant.

This is a book that is an easy read that provokes a new understanding on how to be successful.

Those who are going to find Brain Brilliant an exciting read are those of us who read a lot of the expert's books.

What makes Brain Brilliant exciting is that it is fresh. Imagine how much fun it is to understand how to improve your brains production.

We as a society are always trying to improve our physical body, our leadership style, our sales techniques, and our communication style. We buy in Vogue clothes, luxury cars and live in suburban mansions.

Why are so many people an emotional mess? They have not yet read Brain Brilliant.

We are always finding new and creative ways to, waste or invest depending upon your view, our time and money.

This is clearly a great investment. Who doesn't want to improve your brainpower?

A breakthrough book that will surely find its way to the NY Times best sellers list.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that challenges you to think, January 6, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Brain Brilliant (Hardcover)
At 140 pages and large print, you will get through the book quickly. But the author follows the premises of the book and keeps you thoroughly stimulated. That, I think was her intent.

The book provides knowledge, incites, and challenges. It is these challenges that will result in positive change. I particularly liked the section on dealing with difficult people and the section on stress.

Combining experiences we can all relate to with technical analysis on the working of the brain, I found the book to be quite credible and intend to put into practice recommendations in the book. That to me makes the book of value.

I would highly recommend this book as a backdrop for discussion at a corporate retreat. Its small size should guarantee that most will actually read it.

I will say the book was recommended by the father of AmyK and this was not a type of book I would normally choose. But having read it, I will thank Mr. Hutchens, the next time I see him. It was well worth my time.

This book has changed my thinking about how I will approach my clients in the future. I clearly see that asking questions (and how to ask questions) will benefit my sales goals. Chapter Three has the most valuable tips on communication for my business and my personal life that I have received in a long time. Kudos to AmyK!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brain Brilliant IS Brilliant!, November 30, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Brain Brilliant (Hardcover)
AmyK (is that her real name?) is a marvel! I picked up Brain Brilliant a week ago after hearing about her work from a friend in Atlanta. Although I typically eschew "self-help" books, but this one re-defines the category! You go, girl!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brain Brilliant IS Brilliant!!, November 8, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Brain Brilliant (Hardcover)
I just heard AmyK speak last week. Brilliant does not even begin to describe this woman's energy, passion and animation for such a scientific topic as the brain. She was so clear and practical in her approach that I bought 4 copies. It truly is the perfect holiday gift. I never thought about setting goals in the form of questions before, but it makes complete sense. I never thought about viewing conflict and stress from a neurological perspective, and yet AmyK took hard to understand information about the brain, and literally handed it to me on a silver platter in a simplified format. Finally, a book on the brain that doesn't require an advanced degree to understand it! AmyK gives you so many tools, so many insights about improving your life. She says she's not a motivator, but I'm more motivated than I've been in years. Thanks, AmyK, it's not too hard to tell you're going places!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read, October 21, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Brain Brilliant (Hardcover)
I read Brain Brilliant at the suggestion of a friend who heard AmyK speak at a conference. It has changed the way that I think, react, and process information. It clearly explained how the brain works and how I can maximize my own perasonal life experiences and maximize the net profits in my professional life. This is the first "self help" book that I have read in a long long time that actually had life changing content.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly pragmatic, March 25, 2004
By
"psmitherman" (Atlanta, GA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brain Brilliant (Hardcover)
I bought the book, Brain Brilliant, after attending a workshop given by the author, AmyK. The book was amazing in its simple yet profound concepts. The academic community has known and been working with the ways that the brain learns and hooks on information, but AmyK was brain brilliant enough to transfer those concepts to the business world. I have used her ideas in my "30 second" introduction and in my sales efforts - in everything from cold calling to marketing materials. I highly recommend it to any one who wants to connect with and influence others in the business world.
