Book Description

October 11, 2001
Are you a Lover, constantly surrounding yourself with people? Or a Guardian, always worried about those close to you? How about a Stoic? A Dreamer, Warrior, or Star?

These are the different brain chemistry types identified by pioneering nutritional psychiatrist Michael Lesser, M.D. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Lesser shows how identifying your brain chemistry type can help you conquer depression, reduce stress, and maximize your mind-without prescription drugs. Instead, The Brain Chemistry Diet plan relies on a natural, safe, and effective nutritional approach to regulating mood and boosting brainpower. Tailored to each of the six brain chemistry types, this diet, vitamin, and supplement approach helps readers embrace their strengths, minimize their weaknesses, and nurture the needs of their particular brain type.

Dr. Lesser, along with Linus Pauling, is one of the founders of the orthomolecular psychiatry movement, which focuses on nutritional and vitamin therapy to regulate moods. The Brain Chemistry Diet is his powerful new approach to regulating the physical, mental, and emotional needs of the human brain through proper nourishment and nutrition.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Lesser (Nutrition and Vitamin Therapy) is one of the founders of the orthomolecular psychiatry movement, a group that advocates the use of diet, in addition to vitamins, minerals and herbs, to regulate moods. Here, Lesser and freelance writer Kapklein present individualized nutrition programs that should be followed according to the "brain chemistry type" one falls into. The author designates the six brain chemistry profiles as stoics, guardians, warriors, stars, dreamers and lovers. To determine one's category, Lesser has designed a 60-item questionnaire, a sort of crude personality test that might appear in a magazine quiz. (Acknowledging that this method has not been scientifically proven, Lesser nonetheless presents case studies to back up his categories.) While his diet and supplement programs do differ from type to type (a dreamer should eat more meat than a stoic; a lover needs vitamin A, but a star should take a B complex), Lesser's basic advice is similar for all types. Among other sensible recommendations, he suggests eating five to seven small meals daily, sticking to natural rather than processed foods and giving up white sugar and white flour.

This review is from: The Brain Chemistry Diet : The Personalized Prescription for Balancing Mood, Relieving Stress, and Conquering Depression, Based on Your Personality Profile (Hardcover)
I bought this book because of a superb review in the August issue of Elle Magazine comparing all the various diets out there for my husband who suffers from depression. This has been very helpful though I would say that the quiz could be more thorough and explanatory in its results

5.0 out of 5 stars Great nutrition information, March 1, 2004
This review is from: The Brain Chemistry Diet : The Personalized Prescription for Balancing Mood, Relieving Stress, and Conquering Depression, Based on Your Personality Profile (Hardcover)
I bought this book because I was looking for ideas on how to be the most successful in both mind and body, and this book is great! It was just what I was looking for. You see it every day how nutrition can effect your moods and productivity, so it makes sense that you would want to eat the foods that are going to make your mind and body run the best. I also liked the way the book is written. It's easy to understand and you don't have to be a doctor to figure it out. Thanks Dr. Lesser!
