Book Description

November 3, 2003
Tony Buzan, 'the biggest name in memory', takes a fascinating and exuberant look at the enormous potential of a child's brain and provides parents with the practical tools they need to help their children achieve it. Mind maps, memory games and other techniques allow parents to encourage learning and development for children of all ages. With Tony Buzan it's all brain, no pain! Research shows that the time and energy you dedicate to your child in the first five years pays off dividends for the next ten. With competition for the best schools stiffening, parents having children later and being more aware of the part they must play in their child's education, there is more and more demand for practical resources like Brain Child. Tony Buzan, world-renowned inventor Mind Maps, has written the ultimate 'operations manual' to help parents liberate their child's true brain potential. He explains how the brain develops and the simple things you can do to stimulate your child's multiple intelligences -- including social, creative, numerical and physical -- and unlock his or her natural genius. * Bring out the Leonardo or Einstein in your child * Share fun memory games, number skills and Mind Maps * Raise your child to be happy and confident * Learn new ways of talking to and reading with your child * Let your child love numbers as well as words * Watch him or her excel at school and succeed in life All parents who pick up this book will be inspired and empowered by Tony's understanding of their child's brain and what they can do to fulfil his or her true potential.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'This lively, heartening book radiates enthusiasm and will give parents -- and teachers -- the confidence to believe that, yes, they really can make a difference.' TES (Times Educational Supplement) 'Tony Buzan deserves a medal for coming up with the sanity-saving concept of Mind Maps, which make difficult mental tasks possible, even pleasurable, by engaging the right side of the brain, where colour and creativity reign! The system can be a lifesaver for children with dyslexia-type difficulties.' TIME OUT 'Tony Buzan comes to the rescue with this inspiring, fun and practical book, which helps parents help their children become intelligent in every sense of the word.' EVENING ECHO 'In his desperately needed and paradigm-shifting book Brain Child, Tony Buzan, among many other timely and pertinent observations for the development of the intelligence of your child, identifies that learning Mind Sports and chess in particular, stimulates dendritic growth early in life and provides synaptic protection as you get older! Protect your child and yourself -- buy this book! Brain Child should be nominated as the "Brain Book" of the year!' THE SPECTATOR

Brain Child May 11, 2005
Format:Paperback
As any book by Tony Buzan, it starts with the description of brain, and how large is the possible number of "thought tracks" (learned information, habits or memories), and that is number is so great that writing it would take a line of figures, in normal characters, more than 1.5 million kilometers long. The author proclaims that the brain is by far the most important organ in the baby's body, explains the functions of left and right brains, and enumerate the intelligences: verbal, numerical/logical, engineering/spatial, sensual, body/kinaesthetic, creative, personal, social and spiritual. The writer explains the importance of these intelligences in the baby's life, and helps the parents to develop them: each section ends with "Things For You To Do" list of practical advices for parents.

Great attention is also paid to the importance of physical development, as it is also important for the growth of the brain in the first two years of the child's growth, as well as to the good nutrition. "When we think of food, we traditionally think only of standard nutrition. Good standard nutrition is, though, only of four necessary brain foods. Each of these brain food is equally important and is totally necessary for your baby to survive, without any one of them he will die. They are Oxygen, Nutrition, Love and Information (ONLI).

Tony Buzan in this book didn't forget to reiterate his favourite techniques like Mind Maps, TEFCAS and Radian Thinking.

This book is somewhat based on works by Glenn Doman ("Teach your baby math"), Betty Edwards ("The new drawings on the right side of the brain"), Howard Gardner ("Multiple Intelligences"), Glenn Wilson ("Improve Your IQ"). I recommend reading this books as well.

Although in some places I've found this book a little bit dull, it is definitely worth attention!

For me, this is actually the first Buzan book I've read and the first child psychology book as well. I was actually in the bookstore buying a book for a family member in the self help section when this interesting title by this popular author caught my eye. I actually wanted to buy the book, but the cover was slightly folded here and there and it put me off. After making a few calls here and there with some local bookstores, I realized that this was the only copy left anywhere! I rushed out and bought it (I even checked Amazon.com) and I am more than glad that I did.

Although simple to read and follow, the book touches upon simple things that every parent can do to help their child realize his/her potential. The author does a magnificent job of helping parents better understand what motivates children to do what they do, whether it is something that we, as adults, perceive as positive or negative. It also guides parents on how to deal with their child's behaviour once they have understood it.

The book also contains a wonderful chapter on uniqueness and individuality. The author does a beautiful job of explaining and convincing parents how and why their children will naturally be different from them, even if exposed to the very same experiences. Also, within the same chapter, the author also explains with many great examples and details, why siblings will are noticeably different from one another and the roots of that difference even if all the siblings are exposed to the same parents, school, teachers, etc.

After getting three quarters of the way through this book, I have realized that my parents used many if not most of the parenting techniques recommended by the author and they are all things that I distinctly remember vividly till the very day. Now, I hope that by reading this book and better understanding my children I will be able to give them the very same if not more. I have already started to apply a few of the techniques and changed some of my earlier perceptions about parenting and how to raise my kids and I have seen wonders in a couple of weeks time (not exaggerating). Don't get me wrong, I've always tried to inspire my children and allow them to explore their surrounding world, but reading this book made me realize that I was slightly narrow in my methods and have expanded my horizon and the results have been almost instantaneous.

Overall, this is a wonderful book on how to become a better parent and possibly even understand our children's logic even better, thus improving our efforts to give our precious little ones even more through some very simple techniques, changes in attitude, and approaches.

This is an excellent book. It goes through various intelligences, explaining how the baby's brain is developing in that particular area and then lists very practical suggestions on how to maximize their potential. There are many stories and examples to demonstrate points woven throughout the book, as well. Highly recommend it!
