This review is from: Brain Drain (Audio CD)
This is a good solid album full of progressive rock/metal. You can hear many of the band's influences in the music, most notably heavy AWAKE-era Dream Theater. I'm told this album is a departure from the band's more famous style as heard on Paragraph and its sequels.
The riffs are absolutely top-notch. There are fairly extended instrumental parts in some of the songs that are very interesting. The solos are creative and quite good but not SUPER-technical. The vocals, especially on the ballad-y songs are pretty flat (literally) and easily the weakest part of the band. If 80's era vocals generally make you nauseous, I can virtually guarantee you will hate this. I'd probably give this album 3 and a half stars, but it's too good to round down so I'm rounding up. It's a somewhat flawed album with some great aspects that I'll listen to repeatedly for inspiration. |
