More About the Author

Living successfully with brain injury has been a big part of our lives since August 1990 when Beth suffered an anoxic brain injury following routine surgery. Though we did not know about the brain injury for several months the journey began when the doctor said, "I don't expect her to survive the trauma."

An unbearably long two weeks later Beth awakened to a new world. She did not know who I was, did not know she was married and did not know she had two children.

Fifteen months later we began to learn about the effects of brain injury, and I began to develop ways (strategies) to help Beth live as normal a life as possible...with a lot of lists!

Boy, has she come a long way since that day she put salt in her coffee because she couldn't remember how she liked it. At least she learned that day she didn't like salt in it.

Vision problems, memory problems, cognitive problems and behavioral problems were almost too numerous to count...in the days she was not debilitated with severe migraine headaches.

During the second year following the brain injury she was told she'd probably never be able to work again. The therapists did not know Beth very well, and they did not know the determination we had. A few years later she was promoted to Strategic Sourcing Analyst specializing in computer networking equipment for a Fortune 500 company.

Her story, our story, is one of perseverance.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read, December 8, 2007
This review is from: Brain Injury Survivor's Guide: Welcome to Our World (Paperback)
Brain Injury Survivor's Guide is written in clear, easy-to-understand prose. Like the authors said, it is written for people who have suffered a brain injury, their families and anyone else who wants or needs information about brain injury.

This book tells more than one person's brain injury story. It shows the strategies she used to compensate for her brain. Those strategies and how-to steps, designed to improve memory, cognitive skills and behavior are enhanced in this book by dozens of sample lists. Full-size versions of the lists are downloadable free of charge at the author's website.

5.0 out of 5 stars Answers Many Questions, December 24, 2007
This review is from: Brain Injury Survivor's Guide: Welcome to Our World (Paperback)
What impressed me most about this book is that it provides answers and actual strategies used by the authors. Most other books have presented problems and questions but few, if any, answers. The information applies to all types of brain injury, whether it is classifed as traumatic brain injury, mtbi, acquired brain injury or whatever.

The dozens of lists and explanations of why they are necessary and how they can help is unique to all the books I've read about this subject. I guess the best thing is that it is written by someone who has actually done it because they had a brain injury.

I rated it 5 stars and would recommend it to anyone wanting more information about brain injury. The support website mentioned in the book is equally good and even provides free copies of lists mentioned in the book. It also provides free quizzes to help people.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is what it says it is, December 12, 2007
This review is from: Brain Injury Survivor's Guide: Welcome to Our World (Paperback)
Book arrived two days prior to "expected" date and it lived up to its name. Anyone with memory problems can benefit from the dozens of lists in this book as well as the step-by-step explanations for "helping" your brain.

The story of what happened to Beth is compelling, but the attitude she and Larry adopted to lay out a plan for her success and to follow through hour-by-hour, day-by-day, month after month is an inspiration for both persons who have suffered a brain injury, whether traumatic or acquired, and those family caregivers Larry describes as "the forgotten ones".

There is much information in this book for caregivers: "family and friends who make up the vital support network that will enable a brain injury victim to achieve a successful life."
