The first of its kind, Brain Mapping provides a comprehensive discussion of all methods used to map the brain. The book analyzes the assumptions, limitations, and specific techniques, and integrates the information collected by using them all. It spans the methodological gamut from the molecular level to the whole brain and covers anatomy, physiology, and pathology, as well as their integration.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"On the subject of competitors of this book, my conclusion is that there are none. I am aware of no other such comprehensive, well-illustrated and entirely readable description of the methods for brain mapping, providing everything from the foundations to the major pitfalls and practical applications of the technique... This book should be at hand in every brain imaging lab."
--TRENDS IN NEUROSCIENCE
"Investigation of the functional architecture of the human brain using modern noninvasive imaging techniques is a rapidly expanding area of research. A proper knowledge of methodology is needed to appreciate the burgeoning literature in the field. Now we have an excellent catalogue of the main techniques. The editors have assembled an impressive group of experts, all widely known in their field, who contribute an outstanding set of chapters. The editorial hand has been firm and judicious, placing each contribution in context so that the book develops logically. Coverage ranges from recording intrinsic optical signals through tomographical mapping techniques and electrically and magnetically basis measurements, to issues of experimental design and statistics relevant to image analysis. I cannot recommend this volume highly enough for both experts and those starting out in the field. It is also beautifully illustrated and produced."
--Richard Frackowiak, Institute of Neurology, London in NATURE
"This timely and authoritative textbook brings together a wide variety of both basic and clinical brain mapping methods. Drs. Toga and Mazziotta are recognized experts in the field and have accomplished this difficult task admirably. The finished work reflects the considerable basic science and clinical talents of the multiple contributing authors... this multiauthored book is very well written and beautifully illustrated. Generous use of color figures and excellent line diagrams complement the text. The table of contents is listed in outline form, providing a handy navigational aid... Brain Mapping: The Methods is a timely and important source book for learning more about the tools used to relate brain structure and function. This new reference work will rightfully find its place in the libraries of both research scientists and clinicians in the neurosciences."
--Howard A. Rowley in ANNALS OF NEUROLOGY

From the Back Cover

Brain mapping has forever altered and extended our understanding of the systems of the brain. The integrative capacity of brain maps enables the inclusion of a diverse array of observations and experimental results. Maps are used to describe brain structure, function, and connectivity, to catalog the ever-expanding knowledge base of human and animal nervous systems, to compare healthy tissue with diseased tissue, and to show detailed subsystems and circuits.
Brain Mapping: The Systems is a compilation of the current research and developments in brain mapping. This book, the second in a series, provides an encyclopedic survey of brain maps characterizing the specific systems of the brain. It is a natural companion to Brain Mapping: The Methods because it describes the use of these techniques to create maps of the normal brain. It is an essential resource for all scientists, clinicians, and students interested in brain mapping.
Key Features:
* Brings together the latest developments in brain mapping in one volume
* Provides a detailed and chronological perspective of the field
* Progresses from descriptions of underlying anatomic framework for mapping primary functional systems to more complex cognitive and emotional behaviors
* Includes numerous full-color illustrations for comparing and contrasting brain structure and function
* Allows for the integration of disparate information about the brain --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The book has beautiful illustrations and is filled with in depth information. I bought the book in college when it was 200 and looking back I think it was a bit Pricey, but I kept it and still refer to it. I've even used some of the figures in my own personal presentations.
