The plot called-- Said it won't be able to make it in today, January 8, 2001
Brain Powered seems to be the official anime of dyslexia. Hajime Yatate, instead of thinking of an actual plot, used all his mad language skills to mis-spell the title "Brain Powered" in the Japanese release. Seeing this error, AnimeVillage quickly fixed the spelling error in an improved title art for the US release. Unfortunately, they were too lazy to actually use their improved title art inside the show, or even, god forbid, the previews, but just for the box art. So, inside the show, we constantly see logos reading "Brain Powerd".
Brain Powered finally shows the full extent of Hajime Yatate's brain power (no pun intended). Apperantly, after beating the entire subject of Gundam to death and dismembering its corpse several times with spinoffs like Gundam X, Mr. Yatate was out of "original" ideas. So he bought the Evangelion scripts from Gainax, crossed out characters and mech names, and wrote in some that he made up. he then proceeded to up Evangelion in every possible way.
Lately, the animation quality of TV series has gotten better and better. Series like Cowboy Bebop look closer and closer like OAV series rather than TV. Then there is the animation quality of shows like Brain Powered, which is like a root canal. You think that the anesthetic will make it painless, but you soon realize otherwise. While the animation is sharp and of good quality, the character designs in Brain Powered are about the ugliest I have ever seen. I often had trouble recognizing whether I was looking at a male or female character. I can honestly say that Kanan is the ugliest drawn female anime character my eyes have ever been exposed to.
While the ending theme is quite nice, the music in Brain Powered is surprisingly really nothing special for the most part, which is a huge shock because it is written by the great Youko Kanno. There are a few really great tunes in there, but for the most part it's all very boring. I was extremely surprised when I first heard that Youko Kanno wrote the musical score, because this is very sub-par to most of her work.
Overall, Brain Powered belongs in a trash can. It's a complete disgrace.
