Reading takes a thorough approach to working on the fundamentals of reading and language arts. First comes an original one-page story illustrated in full-color, with 56 stories per grade. Following the story card is a comprehension card, quizzing the reader about the story, its characters, and content. Following that card is a second question card-five questions for 1st Grade, seven for 2nd Grade-on Grammar, Word Choice, Phonics, Vocabulary, Extensions, and Mixed Bag.

Two bound decks of bookmark-shaped cards with twenty-eight 100- to 150-word stories and questions test comprehension, grammar, phonics, word choice, and more. The format lends itself to answer-peeking, so supervision might be a good idea for easily frustrated students. The stories are punchy and entertaining, and the answers provide keys to learning for kids who missed them. Save War and Peace for later and work on the fundamentals today. --Rob Lightner

The series by Brain quest has many levels and covers many topics. This first grade reading comprehension package is outstanding, and was enjoyed a great deal by both myself and the kids. It allows for interaction and helps to develop reading as well as memory and recall skills. Definitely more fun than homework.
