Book Description

July 3, 2006 0393704653 978-0393704655 1

Readers with little background in neuroscience and physiology may find themselves at a loss trying to navigate between the knowns and the unknowns when it comes to understanding the intricacies of the brain.

Brain Science and Psychological Disorders demystifies the field of neuroscience, offering a brisk, digestible narrative of how malfunctioning neurons and neurochemicals can result in psychological disorders. In doing so, Kraly explains the roles of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy in helping to repair various mental health problems, including depression and mania, anxiety, substance abuse, bulimia and anorexia, ADHD, and schizophrenia.

5.0 out of 5 stars A survey of the advantages and disadvantages of drug vs. talk therapies in light of neurological realities, August 5, 2006
This review is from: Brain Science and Psychological Disorders: New Perspectives on Psychotherapeutic Treatment (Hardcover)
F. Scott Kraly's Brain Science And Psychological Disorders: Therapy, Psychotropic Drugs, And The Brain explains how brain chemistry affects behavior, explaining the complex possibilities of neurobiology and drug therapies to explore what happens in the brain of one suffering a debilitating psychological disorder. While it all sounds like readers would need a degree to understand the basics, the beauty of Brain Science And Psychological Disorders is that no advanced knowledge is needed, allowing general- interest audiences a survey of the advantages and disadvantages of drug vs. talk therapies in light of neurological realities.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad writing style and confusing presentation of the material, October 8, 2008
This review is from: Brain Science and Psychological Disorders: New Perspectives on Psychotherapeutic Treatment (Hardcover)
This book left me reeling after every sentence. It is wave upon wave of muddled writing and it never ceases. Every sentence is a puzzle in and of itself. Ironically, this book is meant to enlighten the reader on the brain and various (supposedly) basic functions. Instead, it left me scratching my head and having to read each sentence numerous times in order to retrieve what information F. Scott Kraly may be hiding beneath his dry and scientific writing style.
