I really love this recording because of the novel timbres and textures in the recording. The didgeridoo mostly only plays one note but what a note! The subtle rhythmic pulsations and shadings created by humming into the instrument or changing the embrouchure are quite pleasing. A definite stress buster. The tempo and rhythms are harmonized with the natural rhythms of the body. It has some of the elements of healing music stated in Kay Gardener's book Sounding the Inner Landscape who's CD, Drone Zone, is also for sale from Amazon.com. The first track is mostly rhythmic percussion and I don't find it as pleasing until the pitched sounds finally enter.

I recently purchased this CD after charkra dancer and found that this first CD is much better than the follow up Charkra dancer.

Congratulations for this album! For me was a very good surprise due that i bought it without listening first. The musics in the album transport me to other places, make a stop in time so i can think in the true questions that should care human beings, that sometimes i forget due to our modern society rush. My introduction to the didgeridoo - a primarily North Australian wind instrument made from a hollowed branch, known to the Aborigines - was hearing it first played on the albums produced by the group Outback. It's an instrument that is also known for its healing properties. And it plays a prominent feature on this album, Brainscapes' self-titled debut (12 tracks; 62:12) that was originally released in 1996.Brainscapes is a collaboration of "midi wizard" Alain Eskinasi and Jim Wafer, a yedaki player (a.k.a. didgeridoo). Together they combine to create a sound unlike any other. It is said that the first half of the album is danceable. Indeed, I can picture tracks 2 and 3 being played at a nightclub, despite their not being your conventional quick-tempo dance music. The latter half of the album is said to be geared more toward passive, introspective listening, suitable for meditative purposes. Still, the complete 12 tracks play well together, each one flowing into the other seamlessly, though each one distinguishable in their own right. The ambient music here is hypnotic, if not trance-inducing. Track 1 opens with a pulsating "boom boom boom" (great for if you like bass and have a decent set of sub-woofers). Track 10 is another bass-heavy, slow and spellbinding groove. And I like how track 4 merges a standard tribal drum-beat (featured more prominently on track 9) with an eventual electro-dance layering. The album, I find, is great for chilling. William Aura is credited with digitally remastering the record. The repeated message heard on track 11 ("The land ... your Mother!") is by a man named Uncle Banjo Clark. Both musicians also thank, among others, the group Yothu Yindi, and "all tribal/shamanic peoples still around for surviving and reminding us of the importance of keeping in balance with Mother Earth." Brainscapes was unfortunately a short-lived artistic endeavor, the duo releasing I think just two albums, but they show here that they were more than just one-hit wonders. To the contrary, their music is the antithesis of chart-topping superficiality. Instead, the 12 wonderful tracks make up a highly original and substantial composition that takes you to far-away realms where the spirit soars and spirituality reigns. |
