Book Description

March 1993 0881679984 978-0881679984
This volume presents accounts of seizures and epilepsy written by adult patients in their own words, detailing the feelings experienced before, during and after a wide variety of seizures and offering valuable insights to lay people and professionals alike. Dr Schachter first provides an overview of epilepsy and different seizure types from a medical perspective, and then presents a diverse collection of seizure descriptions written by patients. The book concludes with statements by some of these patients concerning what life with epilepsy is like, including the fear of having a seizure, the social and occupational problems encountered, and the psychological impact of the stigma still prevalent in our culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Understanding Book on Epilepsy, May 8, 2001
As a woman with Epilepsy, I found this book to be easy to read and understand. Personal accounts help give the reader a view on the effects of epilepsy in the patient's daily life. Dr. Schachter makes the terminology of epilepsy understandable. This is a book I would recommend.

This review is from: Brainstorms: Epilepsy in Our Words : Personal Accounts of Living With Seizures (Brainstorms Series, 1) (Hardcover)
While this book does give good info on what it is like to have a seizure, it does not deal with any of the feelings of the people having seizures. It is told too matter-of-factly. Also, if you don't have auras, you will be annoyed by all the people who do have them complaining. However, it is a good reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will wear the shoes of the person who seizes., February 2, 1999

In this book one will see throught the eye of many . You will be able to understand the experence of the person. It is writen in a first person fashion that shows what other books have failed to do. This is the voice of 30 years of firsthand experence. Read this for the person you are thinking of. It will help everyone see what is so hard to grasp. Enjoy, Forrest Herreid
