Kirkus Reviews
Set at a private school in a small Delaware town, Stein's mystery is as much about how a murder investigation affects people as it is about solving the case. Clues, leads and plot twists abound, as Stein threads the plot through solid characterizations on route to a climactic final scene. There's a well-maintained balance of real-world believability and literary license, though, which Stein generally upholds to satisfying results. Even with the sexual tension, this whodunit should appeal to a wide range of ages. A rollicking mystery.

From the Back Cover

"A riveting read! This is a great criminal mystery with twists and turns that keep the reader in suspense to the very end. The author carefully winds us through the twists and turns of a crime involving Delaware's elite and keeps you guessing as to the real identity of the true killer."
-- Annette Sandburg, former Chief, Washington State Patrol

Rarely do I begin a book on a 6.5 hour flight that keeps me awake enough to finish it during the duration of the flight. I found myself ripping through pages of Brainwend Kill having to know what was happening to the characters I had grown to care about. Harley Stein leads readers on an adventurous journey, disliking characters and falling in love with others, all while painting scenes so vivid they'll feel fear pulsing through some character's veins and see a small school community come to life. I highly recommend Brainwend Kill, it is an incredibly satisfying read.

Brainwend Kill by Harley Stein is a must-read for mystery lovers! Within the first chapter, you are completely transported into the story by his detailed descriptions of the novel's setting. He creates incredibly dimensional characters whom you love to root for and yearn to learn more about. Brainwend Kill builds suspense and, as I read further, the harder it was for me to put down.

Great story of a DE New Castle County detective, a kinda sexy high school lady psychologist, and a blind high school junior all trying to solve the mystery of who murdered one of the high school's star junior athletes and budding artists in a ravine near the high school named Brainwend Kill. They all felt, at times, that they had to do some part of the sleuthing independent of the others, since they were protecting or suspecting a friend. This lack of trust spins out latter portions of the story.

I liked all the characters. I especially liked the blind lad, who used his sensitive sense of hearing and sharp intellect every chance he got. Each one of the three leading characters makes one or more mistakes, in their sleuthing, a few of which might have been prevented by greater trust. The detective is in charge, of course, but the others contribute. Several of the suspected killers are interesting characters too. I definitely got caught up in the story and stayed up late a couple nights trying to get closer to the climax. Dave Crooks, Prescott AZ octogenarian

I should preface this by saying I'm not an avid mystery reader and so perhaps not as savvy as some other reviewers as I was totally surprised by the ending! I too started this book on a plane, couldn't put it down and had to have the flight attendant wrench my kindle away mere pages from the big reveal.

Regardless of genre, character development is always of paramount importance to me and Harley Stein definitely delivers. The characters are believable, although the cop seems a bit too date-able, and the wacky coincidences appear to be just the type that actually occur in real life. Sometimes bad and screwed up things just happen to good people and you have to find a way to keep on living through it.

A fun read and an amazing first novel -- bravo!

A very unique story of a blind 11 year old boy who shows "insight" without sight in helping solve a crime that was committed on his school campus. I enjoyed each of the characters, with their different quirks, the interaction between each of the teenage characters as well as the adult characters. As the plot unfolded, you wanted to turn the page quickly to find out what was going to happen next. Interesting story and a great "first" book for this author.

You know it's a good mystery when it digs into the motives of several characters....and you think you might have it figured out.....ahhhh but not quite!! Well written, good development of characters and you truly felt in touch with the school and surrounding community. I particularly enjoyed the in-depth understanding of what life is like for a blind person and how their senses and unique insight provide unique perspectives. Recommended!!
