Major Disappointment for Brak Fans!,

I love Brak. I used to tape all the episodes of Cartoon Planet (still far and away the funniest Brak stuff ever to be broadcast) and show it to my friends, who would fall on the floor laughing. I also loved early episodes of The Brak Show, with it's perfect dynamic of Brak, his Ricardo Montalban-meets- Desi Arnaz dad and June Cleaver mom (wonderfully voiced by Marsha Crenshaw). When the first Brak DVD came out, a lot of fans went straight for the extras and found, to our delight, a bunch of the hysterically funny stuff from Cartoon Planet. Great! Now, if only they would release a second volume with all the classic CP Brak stuff that wasn't included on the first DVD. And then...woah! We heard that a second volume would be released! General excitement filled the air for Brak fans everywhere (everytime I wear my Brak T-shirt, in any city or country, people give me the thumbs up as I walk by)and we all salivated over what would surely include more terrific extras, like volume one did. Now, given that Marsha Crenshaw had been replaced by someone with a completely unfunny (and generally reviled by fans) British accent, the extras would be the only thing that could possibly sell this second volume, but it was more than enough. And then, it arrived. Alas, no extras, no episodes with Marsha Crenshaw as Brak's mom, and a generally disappointing, if not depressing, DVD. Oh well, maybe Cartoon Network will someday release Cartoon Planet on DVD. They should, given that it was the funniest thing the network ever aired. Brak Volume 2 is one major, major missed opportunity.

No extras, missing the New Year's Eve Special, and there's really no reason this had to be on 2 DVD's. Especially disappointing considering how good Volume 1 was. Seems like it was just thrown together, and put out quickly to get the show out of Adult Swim's hair.

Great collection but one bad thing,

The Brak Show, one of my top 20 favorite shows of all time, is back on DVD with the 2nd (and final) DVD collection. I just got this the day after the release date (I was going to get this on the day it came out but the store didn't have it), and I just watched everyone of the episodes. It was a great show with great characters and memorable episodes. The one thing that I (unfortunately finally) noticed was that Brak's mom had 2 voice actors. Sadly, the 1st one left and was replaced by another person with a heavy british accent. Not only that, but also she says things that a British person would say that the other one would never say at all, like wanker or I will shove your arm up your bum. I found that to be odd. Anyway that wasn't the bad thing. The bad thing with this DVD collection is that there are absolutly NO (I repeat) NO special features at all (and subtitles and languages do not count). I find that very bizarre in any DVD period because usually every DVD that I saw always came with some special feature (even if it's teaser trailers theatrical trailers, etc.) I forgot to mention that there is a episode that was the real final episode that didn't appear either on TV or on this DVD collection. It was basically a party with other Adult Swim characters (like the Aqua Teen Hunger Force characters, Sealab 2021 characters, etc.). A good buy for Brak fans, but just remember that you have just episodes and subtitles/languages and that's it!

Disappointing in terms of show and DVD quality,

It goes without saying that the humor seen and heard on this show is an acquired taste. The second, and final, volume of Adult Swim's underrated The Brak Show is disappointing in terms of show quality and DVD features to boot. What made the episodes found on the first volume so good was the interplay between Brak (voiced by Andy Merrill) and Zorak; but sadly much of that gets downplayed here. Not to mention that the dry humor doesn't come off as funny a lot, instead only ending up being more miss than hit. That's not to say that there's not some funny moments popping up in every episode or so, and the voice work by Merrill, C. Martin Croker, and George Lowe, is spectacular as usual. What's even more disappointing about this DVD set is that there are no special features whatsoever included on either disc of the set. Now I know that Adult Swim DVD's are usually sparse on extras, but this is ridiculous. Not to mention that the New Years Eve episode, which was one of the best from the series and included many characters from other shows in the Adult Swim lineup, isn't here at all either. If you're a die hard Brak fan, and I mean die hard, this is worth picking up; otherwise, leave this on the shelf.

Great show, but no extras.,

As a big fan of The Brak Show, I hurried out on the release date to pick up the Volume 2 DVD. I immediately watched it when I got home and greatly enjoyed all the episodes, as I had on Cartoon Network. It's a unique brand of humor, focusing on comedy through absurdities rather than through punchlines. However, I was somewhat disappointed due to the lack of any sort of special features. With all the bonuses the first DVD had, I would expect that the second (which contains the same number of episodes as the first) would have at least something. Alas, no (save for subtitles). The DVD box art is clever, but it's a simple plastic case rather than the elaborate outer and inner jackets of the previous made of a more cardboard-ish material. The various screens of the DVDs feature songs from the episodes, with the two episode selection pages (one on each disc) featuring rap songs from an episode on the first disc. While not as enjoyable as the custom songs of the first, it's still a nice addition. Overall, I love the episodes on these DVDs and would highly recommend them to any fan of the series. You won't be disappointed by the episodes...I just wish there were something more.

Yeah Buddy!,

in my opinion, this still stands as one of the best series ever produced by cartoon network. the writing and
voice performances are among the finest of any animated series. it's a shame that andy merrill got tired of doing the show. i would have liked to have seen these characters go on to greater hights of craziness. next to brak and his family, the simpsons and the southpark gang are just kind of bland. i'll take freeform wierdness over social commentary any day. YEAH BUDDY!

What went wrong?,

I was a huge fan of season one but this crop of episodes stinks across the board. I was very disappointed as the writing and comedy went from off the wall to just plain stupid and annoying. If these episodes were granted more than one hasty first draft each, they don't show it. Worse still, they have an awful new voice for Brak's Mom, a priggish Brit without a single iota of comic timing.
Buyers beware.

I've read a number of reviews of "brak show" volume 2 and all but one of them was negative.
I for one have to disagree and say that I actually enjoyed this volume alot, and in fact I'm re-watching it (for the thousandth time) again right now, as we speak. er- type. whatever. It has an episode on disc two in which mom appears to go crazy, and gets homicidal. How much better can you get than that? Oh, and Dad buys a vacuum cleaner, and Thundercleese falls in love with it. These are only a couple of the hilarious things I love about this set. Honestly if you like "the brak show", if you love the random humor and the off-the-wall antics of these characters... chances are you'll love it as much as I do. Sure maybe it's not my favorite DVD... honestly I'm much more of an "aqua teen" kind of girl. But it's hilarious in a brak-show way, and I suggest if you like Brak, or just like to laugh, buy this DVD and laugh laugh laugh. But then again, it's only my opinion. OH, and one more thing. Obviously the person who didn't know who Clarence was or where he came from doesn't watch the Brak show volume one as much as I do. Because I saw him and instantly knew. It was the episode on volume 1 where Zorak is a bully, and has his bully stand taken over by "butchy tuffington". remember, the butchy is in quotation marks. lol. anyway, clarence was one of the kids who got beat up. He was there when Mom beat butchy up, to get Zorak out of her house. "Are you the new bully?" "No, I"m just brak's mom. now you go home and tell your mother I said hello." "yes ma'am". now it seems to me that someone who doesnt' even remember *that* doesn't need to be acting like he's a brak expert. |
