2.0 out of 5 stars Brak - The novel!, January 16, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Brak Vs. The Sorceress (Mass Market Paperback)
First off - the cover art on my book looks nothing like Brak in the novel. Which is sad because the forward's main point was how good the artwork based on the stories were. They do not even show him with a sword in his hand! Funny, no?
This is a full novel of Brak. Unlike the first book in the series which was short stories we have a full length story - in which he kills evil guards, kills a monster, kills the evil...so on, so on. His muscles stress, his teeth grind, you get the picture. The plot is simple. Nordica Fire-Hair has gone bad and is carrying out occult experiments in her castle. Wait...I would think all experiments in this land would be occult - they have many different gods and spirits. And that last name - really? Fire-Hair? As a family name? Why not Big-Nose or Pinkie-Finger? sorry, off track. Lord Stann, old and sick, asks Brak to help him save his Kingdom. Much of the army, you see, has gone over to her side. She offers them wealth and power and good times.
Now, there are links to the first book, which are slammed over our head like a hammer. Brak is so dimwitted and thick sometimes I am surprised he can walk in a straight line. We figure out much of what is happening before he does - in fact all of what is happening before he figures it out. And he is the Hero of the piece.
This 160 page novel is about 70 pages too long. The story is JUST not that big or epic. Maybe if it felt more realistic. Yes, I know it is fantasy but even fantasy has realistic elements.
Now to read the third book in the series. Buddha save me!
