5.0 out of 5 stars We LOVE this bowl, and so does our coonhound
(Note added 8-2011 - this bowl is SUPPOSED to slide around and not stay put - folks apparently didn't read the company's info sheet). This bowl has provided us and our coonhound many hours of entertainment. Our hound was nearly starving to death when we rescued him so he was voracious whenever food was presented to say the least. Ive been looking for this type of product for a while, and it actually amazes me that no one else has thought of it.. then I realize why

the problem with this, is that each dog is obviously different. The length of the nose and shape of mouth, makes a big difference.

I have 4 labs, 1 of them is a mastermind, and knows the tricks of the trade to get in there and eat fast, the other 2 still goes in circles trying to get it, the last just takes his dandy ol time anyways to begin with

It does work to some extent, but some dogs "learn". so I notice that my dogs at first ate slow, but now eat faster. Not as fast as they would in a normal bowl but still, theres only so much you can do I guess

Lastly, my biggest gripe is the material. Its like cheap plastic imo. My dogs bit their bowls, and the plastic gets damaged easily so my next question is, why didnt they make this with Metal ? or somethhing else more durable?

good luck, hope it works for you..

5.0 out of 5 stars We LOVE this bowl, and so does our coonhound, September 26, 2007

I feed real food, not just kibble and that gives me the opportunity to smear food all around the bowl and posts which prolongs the enjoyment. If you only feed kibble, try adding some quality yogurt or applesauce w/o sugar, and see what fun you and your dog can have. Putting the bowl on a smooth service adds to the fun because it gets pushed around. My hound went from about 30 seconds of eating his meal to about 4 to 5 minutes depending on what's in the bowl, and he absolutely loves it. I have to buy another now for the 2nd dog because he gets so bummed out that he finishes before the hound and has to watch him play with his bowl. I prefer plastic, but if anyone wants a metal bowl, send emails to the Brake Fast company and they will respond. Their service is excellent. My current dogs don't eat their bowls, but I had a husky who would chew on anything plastic so I know it wouldn't have worked for her, either.

For best results - do your dog(s) a favor and put real food in this bowl and not just kibble. I've been feeding real food for over 20 years & my dogs are/have been incredibly fit, healthy & long lived. Our vet is like the Maytag repair guy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brake Fast Dog Food Bowl Works!, February 8, 2008
By
This review is from: Brake-Fast Dog Food Slow Feed Bowl - Medium Blue (Misc.)
I recently purchased four Brake Fast Bowls, three for my dogs (two Rottweiler /Lab crosses and a Great Dane) and one for my foster dog, a Doberman. One of my Rotties tried to tip the dish, but the sloped sides prevented that. He tried to pick it up and dump it, but failed there as well. The other three tried eating as fast as before, but really did have to slow down. My other Rottie mix is now approaching his dish slower (before he would dive into it and send the kibble flying). My only complaint is that the dishes are plastic and there are teeth marks on the posts. I would definately purchase these again in heavy duty stainless steel. I hope the manufacturer reads this!

3.0 out of 5 stars SORTA, February 8, 2008
This review is from: Brake-Fast Dog Food Slow Feed Bowl - Medium Blue (Misc.)
Our dog still gulps her food down without chewing. But did it slow her down? Yes. Did it change her eating style? No. So I guess the dish sorta works. It is made of pretty light plastic so our dog moves it all over the place trying to eat out of it. Maybe that's half the point. If your dog's a chewer, which our's is, don't leave it out.
Make it out of a little heavier plastic so it feels more solid.
Don't expect your dog to change it's eating style. They will still TRY to eat fast.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not to good for a bulldog, May 23, 2007
This review is from: Brake-Fast Dog Food Slow Feed Bowl - Medium Blue (Misc.)
I have a bulldog puppy who eats way to fast. This is a great bowl, but because Bulldogs have flat faces, it really doesnt work too well for them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Brake Fast it does NOT...It scoots all over the floor!, December 5, 2009

I have a young Australian Shepherd who loves dinnertime, but he is not a leisurely eater. He can bolt his whole meal of dry mixture and the homemade bonus in a gulp or two. As any dog lover knows, this can be very dangerous, as it can cause bloat and death.

I had purchased a Skid Stop Slow Feed bowl before, which worked well, but because it had rubberized "feet," became a great teething ring for my guy.

The Brake Fast product lies flat, and the raised cylinders in the bowl work fine. But the plastic is cheesy, and the bottom is not rubberized, so the slightest touch scoots it along the floor. Even if I lodge it in a corner, the dog has to rotate his position to the bowl in order to get to the food, and his snout inches it out of the corner and it begins roving again. My dog has to chase it all over the floor to get something to eat, and that is just plain mean.

I do not recommend this product. The Skid Stop is a better plastic and is rubberized, and if you do have a dog who is teething, he won't ingest sharp shards of brittle plastic like that used in Brake Fast.

I'm looking for this product in ceramic! Let me know if you find one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow Eater!, March 22, 2009
This review is from: Brake-Fast Dog Food Slow Feed Bowl - Medium Blue (Misc.)
This bowl was purchased so our Boxer wouldn't eat his food too fast. He previously would consume two cups of dog food within 3 minutes, now it takes him 15-20 minutes to eat the same amount of food. He didn't like his new bowl at first, after several days of barking and stomping on the new dish during feeding time he eventually gave in to hunger and ate his food.
If you are looking to prevent Gastric Distension or vomitting after eating caused by larger dogs cosuming food too fast then this bowl is what you need.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised for me, August 4, 2008

My choc. lab is a very "aggressive" eater and would finish a cup and a half of food in under 30 seconds. I would have to stay in the kitchen and watch or when he was done with his food he'd wander over to his brother's bowl and a fight would/could insue.

I decided to try this bowl based on the claims that it would slow his eating. It indeed works and slows the dog's eating to a reasonable pace.

I am disappointed by the quality of the bowl. It is very lightweight and my dogs seem to think it's a toy due to how easy it is for them to move it around. This means I have to pick the bowl up after each meal or they'll rip it apart.

This bowl scoots around too much to be useful by itself. Aggressive eaters will move it unless it's on a piece of carpet with a rubber backing or similar no-skid surface.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slows down fast eaters, February 11, 2010

Now our dog has to work for her food, really slowed her down. If your dog has a snout this will work great, but if they have a pug style face it will be very difficult for the dog to get the food.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, less-than-great implementation., December 31, 2008

For our voracious medium-size Lab, the design of this bowl does slow her down a bit. The only problem is how light-weight it is. Unlike her previous ceramic bowl that would stay in place while she ate, this plastic bowl gets pushed all around the floor while she tries to get every last bit out. If they'd have made it of a heavier material (or if there was some way to weight it down) I'd have given it 5 stars for what it is. But unfortunately this great idea was implemented in a cheaper plastic way.
