5.0 out of 5 stars Slam bang Anglo-American rock'n'roll, August 3, 2007
This review is from: Bram Tchaikovsky - Strange Man, Changed Man (Vinyl)
"I'm A Believer" again? No, this is not the Monkees, but if you want to hear a blazing rock version with lots of Chuck Berry to sweeten it, look no further: this band plays the coolest - and fastest version I've ever heard!...Bram Tchaikovsky-the-group is Bram Tchaikovsky (ex-Motors, who were known for their hit "Airport") on guitar and lead vocals; Micky Broadbent, bass and vocals; Keith Boyce, drums. Credits also include Motors man Nick Garvey on backing vocals and surprisingly, Mike Oldfield on tubular bells on one track...'Strange Man Changed Man' was recorded in 1978 at the end of the Punk era, but is not "punk rock"; It's tuneful rock'n'roll played by what Americans call power pop and Brits call pub rock. Either way, this album's exciting riff-driven guitar rock equal parts ballads and fast numbers in a solid wall-of-sound mix. Highlights of this superb but almost totally unknown out-of-print album - currently only found on vinyl - are the title track, the aforementioned "I'm A Believer", a ballad called "Lady from the USA" which was released as a single in the UK, the Romeo & Juliet-inspired "Sarah Smiles", and all-stops-pulled-out potboiler closer "Turn On the Light"...Strange Man Changed Man and Bram Tchaikovsky should have been bigger in the USA. Get a copy if you can...But you'll need a turntable.
