A HERO KING, AGAINST ROMAN MIGHT,
By
This review is from: Bran Mak Morn (Mass Market Paperback)
THE FIRST R. E. H. BOOK I EVER READ, AND IT'S MY FAVORITE. IT'S A COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES HAVING TO DO WITH BRAN MAK MORN AND HIS DOOMED PEOPLES (THE PICTS) STRUGGLE AGAINST THE MIGHT OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE. BRANS ALLIES INCLUDE A LONG "DEAD" KING KULL, WHO MATERIALIZES JUST BEFORE A PIVOTAL BATTLE, IRISH CAVALRY, AND VIKINGS . . THERE'S SWORDS, THERE'S SORCERY ! HOWARD HAS BEEN IMITATED, BUT IN MY OPINION, VERY FEW HAVE COME CLOSE . . . THESE STORIES CRACKLE WITH ENERGY AND SPIRIT ! BUY IT !

Adventure and heros of a forgotten age,
By R. Bagula "Roger L. Bagula" (Lakeside, Ca United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Bran Mak Morn (Mass Market Paperback)
Set at the time of Romans in England when Hadrian's wall
was a going thing, Bran Mak Morn is about a black Pict King who stood against the Romans. In the Arthur tales we have a southern King who stood for civilization: in Bran Mak Morn we have a King who was of the elder blood and sought to turn the greedy tide of Roman urbanization. Robert E. Howard calls every kind of ancient legend and fable to aid his plots and poetry. The books is a well written set of short stories with only a loose connection starting in the'20's and going until the '60's. The story telling is masterly such that many have imitated him since. |
