Book Description

June 21, 2000
A decade of experience with dozens of residential greywater systems led ecological designer Art Ludwig to question everything about conventional greywater system design. He stripped away every possible bit of complexity until the essence of a greywater system remained: a pipe network for distributing water from the house to a number of trees around the yard.

Branched drains provide economical, reliable, sanitary, low maintenance distribution of household greywater to downhill plants without filtration, pumping, or surge tanks. "Branched Drain Greywater Systems" describes how to design, build and use a branched drain greywater system from off-the-shelf components, in just about any context. 51 pages, 24 figures, 42 photos. 8.5 x 11 inches.

Topics include: advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of branched drain systems, designing a system, assessing greywater sources and irrigation need, checking levels with a water level, selecting plants, estimating irrigation need, cost/benefit analysis, installation, laying pipe with marginal slope, branched drains for Third World materials and conditions, mulch basin design, maintenance, system examples, and references and suppliers.

5.0 out of 5 stars All You Need to Know and More, October 30, 2000

This review is from: Branched Drain Greywater Systems [superseded by "The New Create an Oasis with Greywater"] (Paperback)
Having read and heard so much about Art Ludwig's books on greywater recycling designs I first purchased Create an Oasis with Greywater and Branched Drain Greywater Systems hoping they would provide me with some practical assistance in establishing a system to facilitate wiser water consumption. I have since found both books to be outstanding examples of clear, conscise, yet technical descriptions of the theoretical and practical principles behind the turning of what has erroneously been deemed waste, greywater, into an asset. Descibing the pros and cons of different systems/designs and with examples of different systems currently in use, design principles, choosing and finding the best components for the design, installation, maintenance and troubleshooting as well as clear diagrams throughout Branched Greywater Systems is an invaluable resource for anyone planning a better, more logical system for water use and reuse. Branched Greywater Systems is, like all of Art Ludwig's books, a brilliant manual that shows clearly that you do not have to be an engineer, plumber or irrigation specialist to set up a complex water recycling system and that you can do so without a large financial outlay as well. Having been asked which of the books in Art Ludwig' series on greywater is the best for someone wanting a pure insight into the benefits and ease of setup of greywater recycling, without uneccessarily complicated explanation, I could say only all three.

With this book you don't have to be an architect, engineer or plumber to do a perfect installation of a "Branched Drain" greywater system. It's no exaggeration to say this new design is the "best greywater system since indoor plumbing." It is a brilliant, deceptively simple design. This manual covers adaptations for just about every conceivable context and provides step by step construction details in a fun, straightforward manner that eliminates all chance of making mistakes. Responsible technology enthusiasts will appreciate the extraordinary good design and extensive experience behind this book.
