Review

breathe[s] new life into old classic forms ... a long poem about us and the gods that's all high-kicking verve and long-range understanding. I loved its vision, powerful and merciful. -- Ali Smith, Books of the Year Observer

About the Author

Kate Tempest grew up in South-East London, where she still lives. Starting out as a rapper, she toured the spoken word circuit for a number of years, and now works as a poet and playwright. Her work includes Balance, her first album with her band Sound of Rum; Everything Speaks in its Own Way, a collection of poems with CD and DVD of live performance; GlassHouse, a forum theatre play for homeless theatre company Cardboard Citizens; and the plays Wasted and Hopelessly Devoted for Paines Plough. Brand New Ancients won the Ted Hughes Prize for innovation in poetry, and is published by Picador. She is currently working on a new collection of poems, a novel and a new record with music producer Dan Carey.

I have been despairing over the state of contemporary poetry. Our great poets are old and many are leaving us or will soon be leaving us. One thinks of Seamus Heaney and Mary Oliver.

I have feared we are entering a "dark ages" of contemporary poetry. Most new poetry is "just OK" or at best, "predictable."

Little or nothing is being written that is really thrilling--until Kate Tempest's "Brand New Ancients."

I found myself reading passages over and over again. What a pleasure! I can't wait for her next book!

Each time I read this little volume, I am amazed and amazed again. I have heard Kate Tempest preform and if you have the opportunity to do so, go. You will hear her voice for hours if not days.

I love this book. It captured my interest when I saw Kate Tempest on PBS one Sunday afternoon. I would love to hear her read the entire poem - great read - worth reading again and again.

From the heart, from the soul, filled with a gritty look at life and love. Scarred, hopeless, deep and clear, uplifting in its gift to the Gods who are nothing less or more than us.
