4.0 out of 5 stars Dread Solo's 'Brand New Day' Review July 3, 2014
Format:MP3 Music
Swollen Members (Madchild and Prevail) return with their latest album ‘Brand New Day’ (released 6/17) on Battle Axe Records. This project is not for the weak hearted or sensitive. The title appears to be an indirect representation of the group’s fresh start in 2014, delivering a breathe of fresh air amongst a seemingly dying breed of Hip Hop.

‘Brand New Day’ has no guest appearances, leaving listeners isolated with 15 tracks of strictly Swollen Members. Prevail previously stated, “This album is a landmark for us in that it doesn’t feature any guests. Our belief system has been renewed and we agreed that between the amazing production and the complexity of the lyrical value, we could let Brand New Day speak for itself.” They absolutely live up to this statement in every angle.

Madchild’s delivery is amazingly crafted and beautifully eerie, as usual. They both have a way with words and damn near smack you through the speakers, delivering stern, bold lyrical wordplay on this album. Tracks like “Bloodsport” and “Creatures of Evil” attest to this, and could probably hold your grandmother’s undivided attention. Providing pertinent lyrics yet delivering them in a fun, serious tone is not a problem for the two on ‘Brand New Day’. “..I’m spitting tiger style mixing up my martial arts, every line is partially dark, known for saying harsh remarks..” -Madchild on “Cold Sweat”

Rob the Viking, their producer, took over the boards mostly, with guest Dj’s Revolution and Makeway. “Odd Goblins” and “Still Kill” are arguably two of Rob ‘s stand out masterpieces. You can hear the golden-era inspiration engrained in the science with a twist of modern day, personalized mastery. “Bloodsport” and “Brand New Day” are two tracks you can really feel the 90′s boom-bap aura.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Fantastic Album June 17, 2014
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I wasn't entirely digging Beautiful Death Machine. It was a strong album but there were a couple tracks that I could have done without. Not the case with Brand New Day. Every track is a well produced and lyrically strong. This is truly Swollen Members at their best.
