Biography

Biography by Steve Huey

Part of the '90s wave of honky tonk hitmakers that brought country to new commercial heights, John Michael Montgomery made his name primarily as a romantic balladeer. Yet despite his sometime adult contemporary leanings, his vocal style remained solidly grounded in country tradition. Montgomery was born in 1965 in Danville, KY, near Lexington and learned guitar from his… Read more in Amazon's John Michael Montgomery Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

You can't say John Michael Montgomery is an American original, but he's certainly an American. Brand New Me is as masculine, wholesome, and conventional as a pickup commercial. His perspective comes through loud and clear on one of this 10-song set's pivotal numbers, "Thanks for the G Chord": "Thanks for the G chord / Teaching me about the good Lord / Giving me that old Ford/When I turned 16." Holding down the middle ground between honky-tonk traditionalism and unapologetic country-pop, Montgomery matches gestures toward country's roots (a little mandolin here, some sweeping steel there) with the full-bodied drumming and cranked guitar that marks many a modern Nashville production. And of course, no one can wring a ballad dry like Montgomery can. There's nothing inspired or original going on here; indeed, the brand new John Michael sounds mighty familiar. --Steve Stolder

5.0 out of 5 stars The Little Girl Brings This Girl To Tears, September 26, 2000
By
Rena (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brand New Me (Audio CD)
John Michael Montgomery's "Brand New Me" puts together all the necessary elements to present a profoundly moving country album. The highlight of this cd is the heart-wrenching "The Little Girl," which brought tears to my eyes and warmth in my heart that only John Michael could produce. I can honestly say that no song has ever made as much of an impact on me. Other songs that stood out include the opening song, "Brand New Me," which is an up-beat and light-hearted take on dealing with heartache. "Bus to Birmingham," expresses the pain of letting go for the sake of love. "Weekend Superstar" describes what it's like to be a blue-collar worker with an undeniable desire to perform music. Finally, the ballad "Even Then," bleeds a deep and honest love story told through a rolling melody. The bottom line is that John Michael Montgomery puts heart and soul into every note he sings. This album is an explicit display of all that makes country music so good.

5.0 out of 5 stars brand new album, October 7, 2000

Of course "The Little Girl" is a wonderful and powerfull song, but it is the others that make this album. "Even Then" continues the tradition of awesome love ballads by JMM. It will be another wedding song after it is released. "Brand New Me" is another one of those uplifting songs that really make you feel good. Every slow song on the album is worth listening to. "Thanks for the G Chord" is a great tribute to his father, and an even better song. The album ends with "I love it All", a song written by JMM about life on the road. A great way to fininsh off an excellent album. This is in my opinion his second best album next to "John Michael" from 1995.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brand New Me by John Michael Montgomery, September 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Brand New Me (Audio CD)
John Michael Montgomery has added a new style to the Urban Legend about the little girl being held by Jesus when her father murdered her mother. Many have tried to touch the hearts of millions with a song about this legend. But no one has quite done it like John Michael Montgomery. With his voice, music, and lyrics he makes this sad little girl come to life in the minds and hearts of millions. Because of how close it hits home to many people who grew up or are growing up in houses like that, This song is a winner in my book.

Every song that John Michael Montgomery has put together in this album complements the others. It is a perfect blend of happy, Upbeat songs, mixed with slow, Sad songs that end up wonderful, and gives you hope for the future.
