The Little Girl Brings This Girl To Tears,
By Rena (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brand New Me (Audio CD)
John Michael Montgomery's "Brand New Me" puts together all the necessary elements to present a profoundly moving country album. The highlight of this cd is the heart-wrenching "The Little Girl," which brought tears to my eyes and warmth in my heart that only John Michael could produce. I can honestly say that no song has ever made as much of an impact on me. Other songs that stood out include the opening song, "Brand New Me," which is an up-beat and light-hearted take on dealing with heartache. "Bus to Birmingham," expresses the pain of letting go for the sake of love. "Weekend Superstar" describes what it's like to be a blue-collar worker with an undeniable desire to perform music. Finally, the ballad "Even Then," bleeds a deep and honest love story told through a rolling melody. The bottom line is that John Michael Montgomery puts heart and soul into every note he sings. This album is an explicit display of all that makes country music so good.

Of course "The Little Girl" is a wonderful and powerfull song, but it is the others that make this album. "Even Then" continues the tradition of awesome love ballads by JMM. It will be another wedding song after it is released. "Brand New Me" is another one of those uplifting songs that really make you feel good. Every slow song on the album is worth listening to. "Thanks for the G Chord" is a great tribute to his father, and an even better song. The album ends with "I love it All", a song written by JMM about life on the road. A great way to fininsh off an excellent album. This is in my opinion his second best album next to "John Michael" from 1995.

Brand New Me by John Michael Montgomery,

John Michael Montgomery has added a new style to the Urban Legend about the little girl being held by Jesus when her father murdered her mother. Many have tried to touch the hearts of millions with a song about this legend. But no one has quite done it like John Michael Montgomery. With his voice, music, and lyrics he makes this sad little girl come to life in the minds and hearts of millions. Because of how close it hits home to many people who grew up or are growing up in houses like that, This song is a winner in my book.Every song that John Michael Montgomery has put together in this album complements the others. It is a perfect blend of happy, Upbeat songs, mixed with slow, Sad songs that end up wonderful, and gives you hope for the future.

A great one from John Michael,

John Michael Montgomery has always been a good ballad singer, and his most recent record, Brand New Me, has plenty of fine slow songs. His #1 hit "The Little Girl" is the highlight here. The song starts out as a pretty depressing song, with the girl living with her neglectful, substance-abusing parents("Her daddy drank all day and mommy did drugs/Never wanted to play or give kisses and hugs"). However, after the girl loses her parents in a murder-suicide(where her dad got home drunk, "used a gun on her mom and then took his life"), she gets adopted and goes to her new home. When she goes to Sunday school, the girl sees the picture of Jesus on the cross and realizes that He had rescued her from her abusive situation. I probably gave away too much of the plot here, but I will say that with its great lyrics and powerful message, I think "The Little Girl" ranks right up there with "I Swear", "I Can Love You Like That", and "I Miss You A Little" as one of the best ballads John Michael has ever done. He has plenty of other good ballads here, among them the lost-love songs "Bus To Birmingham" and "That's Not Her Picture", the positive songs "Even Then" and "Real Love", and the moving song "Thanks For The G-Chord"(which John Michael says he picked with his father in mind). Great ballads, all of them. However, John Michael also knows how to have fun in his songs, as he's proven already in his career with his upbeat hits "Be My Baby Tonight", "Sold" and "Cowboy Love". On Brand New Me, the songs "That's What I Like About You", "Weekend Superstar", "I Love It All", and the title track "Brand New Me" are all toe-tapping, uptempo songs, just the kind of songs someone would want to play to get a party going. All in all, I think this record is one you will really want to listen to. John Michael's made a career out of making great records, and from him, Brand New Me is still another strong one.

It is a shame that Atlantic records folded. This is the best JMM album yet, and the public is not going to get to hear it. "Even Then" is the best wedding song since "I Can Love You Like That", and radio is not playing it. There are many other great cuts that radio will probably not end up playing either. The title track is the best uptempo song since "Sold". Every song on the album is worth listening to. Buy it!!!

Contains THE Best Love Song I've Ever Heard,

The rave on this CD is all about #8 "The Little Girl". True it is one of the top hits this year, but song #5, "Even Then", is the best song on this record. If you liked "I Love the Way you Love Me", "I Swear" and "I Can Love you Like That", then you are going to love "Even Then."This is the song that I'm going to sing to my bride the day we get married. The day we bought this album, we danced to this song and fell in love with it. I pray this song can reach the top of the charts.

John Michael Montgomery hits the bulls-eye again!,

I absolutely loved this album. This album should get him back up there after the undeservedly low sales of what is still his strongest and best effort, "Home To You." The best songs on this album include "Brand New Me", "Weekend Superstar", "That's What I Like About You", and the especially good "I Love It All." The two stand-out songs on this album are "The Little Girl" and the beautiful, powerful ballad "Even Then." He once again proves he can sing a ballad as good as anyone. Keep it coming!

Some of John Michael's best work,

Sometimes amazon.com seems to just impulsively bash country albums. The arrangements and vocals in the songs sound very inspired. You can hear it from the forceful playing of standout faster songs such as "Brand New Me," "Real Love," and "I Love It All," to the melancholy chords in the powerful song "The Little Girl." In fact, "I Love It All" has too many instrumental flurishes, but it's still very entertaining. There are a couple filler songs on here - "Weekend Superstar" and "That's What I Like About You" - but they're still catchy little ditties. "Even Then" and "Bus To Birmingham" offer substantive ballads for John Michael to use his good vocal chops on. I was glad to find out that this CD has much more to offer than just "The Little Girl."

My daughter is so sick of hearing this album over and over and over again even though she likes John Micheal Montgomery as much as I do. Its always in my CD player in my car.
