4.0 out of 5 stars Return of the ROCK
If the processed garbage you've been force-fed by corporate radio hasn't totally killed your desire to ROCK, then it's time you tried Brand New Sin.

Creed is not ROCK. Coldplay is not ROCK. ROCK is loud, heavy, tattooed, fist-pumping and alcohol-fueled. Brothers and sisters, Brand New Sin is ROCK! Brand New Sin is the band you expect to find at your favorite...

3.0 out of 5 stars A solid start.
Very interesting music, I am hopeful for a second release from these guys. All in all a very solid release which mixes elements of southern blues rock with the modern day nu-metal "wall of sound." Don't get me wrong, this is NOT nu-metal, but some of the simplistic chord structures are the same. The slower songs are reminescent of Allman Brothers, and the...

Creed is not ROCK. Coldplay is not ROCK. ROCK is loud, heavy, tattooed, fist-pumping and alcohol-fueled. Brothers and sisters, Brand New Sin is ROCK! Brand New Sin is the band you expect to find at your favorite bar, belting out heavy as hell songs that would make Motorhead and Black Label Society proud.

Forget about radio. Forget about trends. Spread the word - ROCK is back, and bands like Brand New Sin and Fireball Ministry are leading the charge. If you miss real hard rock music, check out Brand New Sin.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff, July 10, 2002
This review is from: Brand New Sin (Audio CD)
You won't here anything new on the debut from Brand New Sin, but this is good stuff. The band mixes a number of styles, for a varied sound. One part thrash, one part style southern metal, one part rock and role and a good chunk of old fashioned metal. Good gravelly vocals that are reminicent of Pepper Keenan, Phil Anselmo and a little John Bush. The songs are melodic, but have good driving guitars. After a brief intro, the CD starts off with the strong "Broken Soul". Catchy chorus and good, driving guitars, this song sets the pace. "My World", "Sad Times" and "Missin You" slow it down, the second song with a definate bluesy/southern sound and "Missin You" could have come off of a Pride and Glory albumn. The rest of the CD is up tempo and there isn't a bad cut on the disc. Fans of COC and Black Label Society will like this.

Very interesting music, I am hopeful for a second release from these guys. All in all a very solid release which mixes elements of southern blues rock with the modern day nu-metal "wall of sound." Don't get me wrong, this is NOT nu-metal, but some of the simplistic chord structures are the same. The slower songs are reminescent of Allman Brothers, and the harder straight ahead rockers sound, vocally, like the angry delivery of Godsmack. A few of the syncopated rhythm rockers sound a bit like mid 90's COC. The nice addition, absent in much "modern music," is a little fretboard soloing activity, which you NEVER see in any new metal song. Ask a new metal guitarist to play a progressing lead pattern diatonic solo in the key of E minor and he'd go, "what?" The leads are solid, but not overwhelming, and are a very nice addition. The first half of the album is the best, and though there really is no filler here, the race to the end is a bit downhill. Unless these guys intend to blaze like old Molly Hatchett used to, I don't think they need three guitarists! Good stuff! More!

5.0 out of 5 stars In your face guitars!, July 1, 2003

I saw these guys open for Black Label Society's "Back Yard Barbque" last September at the Stone Pony and they kicked butt! I immediately went out and bought this CD and I love it. Old School Metal, just the way I like it. Most people would think that having 3 guitar players would be too much, but this is simply not the case. The more I listen to this CD, the more I like it. The producers on this album did an awesome job and the sound quality is excellant!

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong Album, February 19, 2004

Old School sound. The singers voice is raspy and contains lots of attitude. The band has a metal meets classic southern rock sound. Together, it appears Brand New Sin plan to stick with what works, without trying to pull off a NU metal sound. This is straight up rock for the blue-collar worker. If you like BLS, you won't be dissapointed with BNS.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another one from Now or Never records, March 18, 2003

Now or Never Records are signing a lot of good bands of late. Brand New Sin being one of them, I only bought this album because it was on N.O.N. records. But at first listening I liked it alot. There are a lot of BLS influences but over all they got a good southern sound. I didnt find any of the tracks lacking anything, the whole album is really good. Don't worry they definitly don't do the rapcore or nu metal stuff. They are a pure southern metal band, and a must buy record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Has metal come back without the term "Nu" in it?, January 16, 2003

I must say this album is the first one this year I purchased that I feel I didn't get ripped of my money. Granted, it came out last year, but I just bought it the other day. Excellent sonds and lyrics, with (dare I say it) gutiar solos!! <gasp> Yea, yea, I know..Solos nowadays aren't supposed to be cool, which I could never figure out (god forbid one knows how to play an instrument) you have the triple threat crunch and solo shredding of Kris Wiechmann, Ken Dunham, and Slider(who also does the great harmonies on vocals you hear)..Chuck Kahl rips on bass, and the precision and thudding of galloping double kicks of drummer Mike Rafferty(he has since left).. Kevin Dean is the new drummer, and I saw these guys live, he hits everything on target as if he were a machine. Last but not least is the singer..Joe Altier. Let me put it to you this way...Take early Phil Anselmo, mix in some Scott Weiland circa "Core", and some John Bush of Anthrax fame, and you got a guy that can push out the rage but downright sing the songs with feeling!! The album starts with an intro right into "Broken Soul"...killer first song, catchy chorus, and like I said, guitar solos<yeee-eesss>....next track is "My World"...slower, kinda sad, but with a crunch..I could write a review about every song, they're all good...check out "SSP", "Judgement Day", and the haunting "Sad Wings"..anyway, I'm not against Nu-Metal, it's just refreshing to hear a good metal album that was made recently. Check them out live especially...they're on tour with Saliva now, then hook up with Kittie next month (when I'll see them again)

5.0 out of 5 stars RnR, January 8, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Brand New Sin (Audio CD)
I give this 5 stars, not because it is as good as the best recording I have heard, because it delivers exactly what it means to deliver. I can give a 5* rating to a fast food joint, and 4* to a fancy restaurant, even thought the fancy one may have better food, possibly because the fast food place does what it is supposed to do, and the fancy one does not. That is the way Brand New Sin is. If you like just straight hard rock and roll, no sappy ballads, no rap rock, no 7 string guitar, no slapped bass, no baseball caps backwards, no opera style singers, no growling vocals......no gimmicks...then you will like this CD as much as I do. It is not groundbreaking or totally different from anything you have heard before, and they are not going to revolutionize the music world, but it is what it is supposed to be. If you like COC, Down, Zakk Wylde, etc, then you should check out this band.

If I didn't like this album I'd call Brand New Sin a bad Black Label Society. However, I did like this album. It isn't anything new or groundbreaking, but I think it's a good album to own anyway. If you like real heavy metal or southern rock with a little crunch, I think you'll enjoy this album too. I got this album for just [price] and I'm satisfied. I'd be perfectly willing to go see them live too. Anyway, if you're a fan of Zakk Wylde or Soil you should pick this one up.
By the way, this album will grow on you. This music just kicks .... No none of these guitar players can go toe to toe with Zakk, but this band is great anyway. Don't listen to the people bitching about Brand New Sin. A solid effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock & Roll is Not Dead!, June 12, 2002
This review is from: Brand New Sin (Audio CD)
I caught this band with Motorhead last month and I was impressed as hell. Good hard crunching rock with solid musicians and a great singer. Their CD confirms this. I don't know if they are the future of rock and roll but they are a hell of a positive sign. I'm tired of all the bands that think that volume and attitude are enought. These guys have something to say and they do it well.
