Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

How refreshing: a heroine who runs a bordello, can take care of herself very well, thank you, and isn't above uttering the occasional curse word. Spirited Ann McCastle, when not warning assorted evildoers off with her shotgun, manages her own wild west saloon. After her partner dies, Ann carries on solo, until the enigmatic Ian McShane shows up, claiming her partner sold him controlling shares in the saloon just before his death. In order to keep rival businessmen and amorous customers at bay, Ian suggests that he and Ann marry. The fact that strong-willed Ann gives in to the suggestion with relatively little argument is a bit out of character, but with so much going on in the plot, it's easy to forgive. Once married, Ann realizes she's given up much more than her maiden name. How is she going to keep Ian in the dark about the secret door in her bedroom, used for slipping away in order to aid the town's underdogs against the resident land baron? In typical Drake style (Knight of Fire), the plot moves right along with a plethora of interesting secondary characters and story lines, including flashbacks of Indian massacres, whores with hearts of gold, arson, loyal lawyers, a French chef and a theater-struck young man who quotes Defoe.

More About the Author

New York Times and USA Today best selling author, Heather Graham was born somewhere in Europe and kidnapped by gypsies when she was a small child. She went on to join the Romanian circus as a trapeze artist and lion tamer. When the circus came to South Florida, she stayed, discovering that she preferred to be a shark and gator trainer.

Not really.

Heather is the child of Scottish and Irish immigrants who met and married in Chicago, and moved to South Florida, where she has spent her life. (She has, at least, been to the Russian circus in Moscow, where she wished she was one of the incredibly talented and coordinated trapeze artists.) She majored in theater arts at the University of South Florida. After a stint of several years in dinner theater, back-up vocals, and bartending, she stayed home after the birth of her third child and began to write. Her first book was with Dell, and since then, she has written over one hundred and fifty novels and novellas including category, suspense, historical romance, vampire fiction, time travel, occult, horror, and Christmas family fare.

She is pleased to have been published in approximately twenty-five languages, and has had over seventy-five million books in print. She has been honored with awards from Walden Books, B. Dalton, Georgia Romance Writers, Affaire de Coeur, Romantic Times, the Lifetime Achievement Award from RWA and more. Heather has also become the proud recipient of the Silver Bullet from Thriller Writers. Heather has had books selected for the Doubleday Book Club and the Literary Guild, and has been quoted, interviewed, or featured in such publications as The Nation, Redbook, Mystery Book Club, People and USA Today and appeared on many newscasts including Today, Entertainment Tonight and local television.

Heather loves travel and anything that has to do with the water, and is a certified scuba diver. She also loves ballroom dancing. Each year she hosts the Vampire Ball and Dinner theater at the RT convention raising money for the Pediatric Aids Society and in 2006 she hosted the first Writers for New Orleans Workshop to benefit the stricken Gulf region. She is also the founder of "The Slush Pile Players", presenting something that's almost like entertainment for various conferences and benefits. Married since high school graduation and the mother of five, her greatest love in life remains her family, but she also believes her career has been an incredible gift, and she is grateful every day to be doing something that she loves so very much for a living.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK! I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!!, December 3, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Branded Hearts (Mass Market Paperback)
I never read a romance novel before, always thinking that they had no point, but from the moment that I picked this book up at the airport I've been hooked ever since. It was a good thing that the plane ride was a relatively long one, because I'm sure that if we landed I couldn't have put the book down long enough to get my baggage. The plot was enticing, the characters charming, and the surprises around every corner kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved the way that Ann could shoot and ride with the best of them, and the chemistry and passion between Ian and Ann was wonderful. I definately recommend reading this book. You won't want to put it down!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of chemistry., April 27, 2000
This review is from: Branded Hearts (Mass Market Paperback)
Ian and Ann are survivors of an attack when they were young, but they don't know it. Throw in some sexual tension, engaging secondary characters and a villian who wants Ann and her saloon, and you've got one heck of a western. I like Ian and the way Ann tries to "manage" him. Read and find out how.

It has a great feel of the Old West, romance, intrigue, and poignant scenes with a shocking secret that involves the two main characters. It's worth the read!
