Maria Ross's book, Branding Basics, helped me build my own brand for my business and it saved me a lot of money in the process. This book is so well-organized and detailed, it does a really great job explaining the basics of what a brand is, how a brand strategy and marketing plan work together, and all of the pieces and parts that are important components of building a solid long-term brand. The second edition also includes some great advice about blogging and social media and how it is - or isn't - useful for brands and marketing, depending on your goals and your customers. Maria also does an excellent job identifying some of the more subtle ways we build our brands offline, like through networking. Overall, I highly recommend Branding Basics for Small Business because it is a smart, comprehensive guide for anyone who wants to understand how creating a solid brand can help you grow your business.

I've been following Maria Ross's (the author's) advice for more than a decade - often times realizing that my own advice to businesses I consult with is rooted in her foundational wisdom. This book is exactly what you need to understand the who, what, why, when and how of branding. She not only makes the concepts around brand (and all related efforts like marketing, PR, advt, etc) easy to digest, she GIVES YOU THE MAP to create your own brand strategy. With substantial stories and a light-hearted touch, she makes the overwhelming prospect of "creating my brand" attainable. And what I REALLY love is that she taps into the fact that your brand IS your passion manifested - there are reasons why we all create the companies we do and she shows us the path to letting the world not only know why you are doing what you are doing but also connect to that purpose on a genuine level. This little book will be your back pocket playbook for years to come.

Maria Ross reminds us of the fundamentals: you don't build a house without a blueprint. And you don't build a brand of any meaningful value without a strategy. What a relief that solid and enduring brand strategy doesn't have to cost the GDP of Norway! It can be done effectively, if you take the time to answer the questions Ross has thoughtfully included. Branding Basics strikes a good balance between DIY and why you need a professional like her to guide you through the process.

The only things I would've liked to see more of in the book were a little more on the psychology of buying decisions shared upfront so that business owners understand the “why” of branding a little more deeply. Also, it would have been handy to see examples of how some businesses have evolved their brand/brand strategy, and didn't necessarily have it all together, but put it together building block by building block. All-in-all, it's a handy guide, one worth re-reading as your brand changes and grows over time. I can see myself consulting it regularly.

I was lucky to take this first as a class taught by Maria live, long before the book, and at a substantially higher price, and even then I couldn't believe the value. All the branding info I'd heard for years but just never "clicked" as to why it had to be done finally made sense. When Maria's book finally came out, I snapped it up for myself and then bought it for several friends. And obviously I wasn't the only one since she now has a second edition out.

If you struggle with why you need a brand, this is your book. Maria Ross lays it out in language you can understand with exercises that will directly impact your business. Why else read a business book if you can't apply it right away? Highly recommended...but you have to actually use it to see the results!
