Book Description

It was the evening of April 5,1970, shortly before midnight, when four young California Highway Patrol officers were gunned down in a parking lot along Interstate Highway 5 near the site of the future Six Flags Magic Mountain.
The country was still reeling from the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert Kennedy.
On the 40th anniversary of the death and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., over 300 family, friends, colleagues, and involuntary participants gathered to remember the event that led to the day's dedication of a five mile portion of Interstate Highway 5 as a memorial to the fallen officers. That tragedy was dubbed by the media as the Newhall Incident.
Bud Bradshaw's account of these events is the only authorized version of this tragedy and was made possible with the cooperation and assistance of the California Highway Patrol, their investigation of what happened, and through extensive interviews with the families of the victims, and those who later joined the list of casualties.
Mr. Bradshaw's book is a significant contribution not just for the families and relatives of the fallen but because by its very nature how this tragedy has influenced and continues to influence the training of law enforcement personnel in academies across this country as well as to fuel the debate over gun control.
As a nation, we are becoming conditioned to an ever increasing level of violence. The pundits search for an understanding of how such violence can occur; others search to find out who is to blame, while still others are in denial that such events occur in significant numbers to even warrant our attention.
Brandishing does not exploit our worst fears. Without finger pointing, Brandishing sets out to describe a time and a place and the people involved.
Mr. Bradshaw weaves a fabric that brings the reader into the events and makes them care. They will care for the officers and they will care because of the shared memories of the families and colleagues left behind and they will care as citizens of our nation.
The brandishing act that lit the fuse that started the evening of terror and death was a 911 call made by a couple reporting that they had just been victims of a driver who brandished his gun. It was a near deadly act of road rage when the driver of a VW Beatle, rushing to return to his military base, was cut off by the driver of a red Pontiac.
The two drivers had a heated discussion about what had just happened. One of the drivers was armed and pulled out a gun, his name was Bobby Augustus Davis.

My late first husband Skip Pence, is one of the 4 officers whose lives and tragic deaths are detailed in Brandishing.Mr Bradshaw thoughtfully and respectfully wrote this book following many years of research and interviews. The event he brings to life happened over 40 years ago, yet,I felt thrust back to it the moment I began reading. It is compelling and draws the reader into the everyday lives and ultimely deaths,of 4 young CHP officers who were also hubands and fathers. I wholeheartedly endorse this emotional book.I feel that anyone who enjoys true life dramas would benefit from this story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brandishing - The Newhall Incident September 27, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Brandishing is a gripping true crime story - a thorough and accurate retelling of the events leading up to, surrounding, and the aftermath of the Newhall Incident. As the daughter of one of the fallen officers, I was impressed with Mr. Bradshaw's touching recounts of the family lives of the officers. He made the story come to life. A must read for any true crime fan.

Chilling... I hung on Mr. Bradshaw's every word. I literally could not put this book down! The author does an excellent job of recounting the events leading up to, during, and following the Newhall Incident. All of the persons caught up in this tragic event were personified in a way that left me feeling like I knew them. Although unsettling, the story was suitably told.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart warming/Heart wrenching September 14, 2011

A very personal "replay" written with compassion for the victims and loved ones of the tragic and
needless slaughter of four loving, community committed young men - husbands and fathers and sons,
including my sister Jan's husband Skip. A must read for everyone that reads TRUE LIFE stories. This
book is the REAL WORLD and we can only hope to learn from this tragedy. Mr. Bradshaw is to be
commended for a job perfectly done.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really good read. October 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This well researched true story draws the reader into the lives of both the victims and the killers. Then turns to the subsequent tragedies befalling the victims families. The shooters ended the lifes of the four officers, and destroyed many others, including their own. An engaging read that you will remember long after the last page is turned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accurate and honest review of the actual event. October 2, 2011
By Sgt RL
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was involved in this incident as a Sgt in charge of the tear gas team. The events are extremely accurate, especially the amount of tear gas we shot into the house. I was outside of the house when our team broke in and secured the location. We we were all pleased that the outcome ended on a positive way. One extremely dead guy.
