So we saw Lukas Nelson opening for his Dad in Texas. He is fast on guitar and can even play with his teeth. Here the comparison to Jimi Hendrix. Then I downloaded his EP and started listening to the music.

Lukas' voice is limited, like his Dad's but he can sing mean rock. Let's face it, not every good rock singer is a SINGER. Lukas is one. He modulates his voice enough to just pretend that his singing is wholesome. Jimi Hendrix was relaxed, even when he sang about killing his girlfriend. Lukas is always on edge with the emotions localized but clear.

Jimi sang poetry in many cases. Just Bob Dylan's "Watchtower" is a good example. "Hey Joe" is poetry too, in spite of its meanness. Lukas' songs get there to the poetry level with "Mystery" and the search for freedom. He does not sound like a Texan and sings like somebody from Cleveland or Pittsburgh.

And Lukas' guitar is pure pleasure. Seems simple, maybe just repeating what Jimi Hendrix did in his own way. The band (the drummer) sounds like the Experience and there are small pieces of Jimmy Page thrown into the mix. The guitar never stops swinging even with basic riffs and repetitions. Lukas knows his timing much better than his Dad. He can improvise, play solos and enjoy speed of his notes coming from his beautiful instrument. Have fun listening!

We saw Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real when they opened for B.B. King in Charlottesville. We had no idea who Lukas was, and just hoped that he and the band wouldn't stink. All I can say is "Wow"! That kid can play guitar, and he sounds eerily like his dad when he sings. He and the band were sitting by the merchandise booth between his and B.B.'s sets, and they signed CD's and chatted with fans. We still didn't know who Lukas was, but were so blown away by his music - especially his rendition of "Hoochie Coochie man" where he played the guitar with his teeth - that we bought Brando's Paradise Sessions on the spot. It wasn't until I googled Lukas Nelson the next day that I had my "duh" moment when I read that he is Willie Nelson's son. I would highly recommend purchasing this CD so you can enjoy this wonderful talent! He is working on a full length CD and I can't wait for that to be released!

I was very pleased with my purchase of this EP. Lucas is the son of Willie Nelson and in some ways follows in his fathers footsteps. It was well worth the money.

Lukas shows off another side. He can do it all. Separates himself from anyone else. A breath of fresh air.
