An odd split?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Brandtson / Camber / Seven Storey (Split Cd) (Audio CD)
I really never understood why Seven Storey Mountain was ever on Deep Elm. And I equally wonder why this comp came out with them, and two other of Deep Elm's bands that really sound nothing alike. I think it's good to have variety on comps. It exposes the listener to new bands and new sounds. But the problem with this comp is that it has no focus. And on top of it, the best band on it, Seven Storey, is last. Brandtson is a kinda whiny, emo band with not a lot of creativity to show fot themselves. Camber is very similiar in a sense that the band displays nasally vocal, and a grab-bag of "emo-rock" cliche sounds and rhythms. Both of the fore-mentioned bands I would not purchase a record by, but I wanted some new Seven Storey Mountain tunes. By the time I got to the the end of the comp, I was was dying to hear the Seven Storey songs! While the the songs I waited to hear kicked ass over the rest of the comp, it was still lacking a bit. It sounded like Seven Storey gave out some throw-away songs or something, because the drums sounded like they were samples. Possibly a couple of demos? Upon going to the bands website, http://www.sevenstoreymountain.com, I noticed that the band does not even list this release in their discography. Hmmmm? What's up with that. Could it be that they were obligated by contract to do a comp with the label, as unfocused as the outcome might be? Who know's, but I would suggest trying to find these two songs, "Covers" and "New Day" on the internet or something. The record is pretty over-priced for what you get, like most of Deep Elm's records, and to be honest, this is not Seven Storey Mountain's best work to date. I anxiously await their next record that comes out later this year. I'll give (3) stars for the Seven Storey songs, just because I love this band and have for ages. But the other two lame bands on this comp drag the total down to (2) stars.
