Book Description

August 1, 1998 Stan Turner Mysteries
Step into the shoes of Dallas attorney, Stan Turner, in the late 1970's as he begins the practice of law. Then hang on for the ride of your life as Stan immediately steps into a rattlesnake's nest and has to do some fancy two-steppin' to avoid a lethal strike from his own clients. When Stan's wife, Rebekah, is arrested for murder and a client turns out to be a ghost, Stan turns in his legal pad for a detective's notebook and goes to work to solve these most perplexing mysteries. Teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, Stan pushes on relentlessly to extricate himself and his family from certain doom. Sex, greed and a lust for power drive this most extraordinary novel to a stunning conclusion.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Brash Endeavor" was fabulous-a real page turner-I didn't want it to end! -- Allison Robson, a newscaster for CBS Affiliate, KLBK TV, Ch 13 Lubbock, TX

Manchee could be Dallas' answer to John Grisham...Brash Endeavor, a page-turning tale of a small-time lawyer in over his head... -- The Dallas Observer, Fall 1998

Review, Dallas Observer Thursday, July 30, 1998

William Manchee could be Dallas' answer to John Grisham. Manchee, an author who has maintained a private law firm in Dallas since 1975, recently published Brash Endeavor, a page-turning tale of a small- time lawyer in over his head with some big time clients. Just like Grisham's books, the protagonist appears to be a thinly veiled version of Manchee. The novel follows Stan Turner--the character that Manchee introduced in the well-received Undaunted, as he moves to Dallas to open up his own law practice and becomes involved with an insurance scam that ends up with his wife being falsely accused of murder. It sounds like just the kind of potboiler that Grisham is known for. Let's just hope Manchee doesn't option any of his books to movie producers. -- The Dallas Observer, July 30, 1998

From the Publisher

Brash Endeavor is the second of the Stan Turner Mysteries. Stan Turner is a young attorney fresh out of law school. Being rather green and naive he starts his law practice with a $2,000 advance on his credit card. It's the late seventies in Dallas and there a lot of shady real estate and oil gas promoters around. A couple of these become Stan's clients and they get him in deep trouble fast and his wife, Rebekah, ends up on trial.

The first Stan Turner Mystery is Undaunted. It's the story of Stan Turner's long and perilous road to becoming an attorney. As a child Stan has a brush with the law and becomes interested in the legal system and decides he wants to become an attorney. Along the road he faces every imaginable obstacle the worst of which is when he is drafted into the Marine Corps he inadvertantly befriends a serial killer.

Coming June 2000 is the third Stan Turner Mysery, Second Chair. While Stan defends a young college girl accused of killing her baby he is distracted by threats on his life from a fanatic who calls himself Doomsayer and a cult group known as the Children of Despair.

More About the Author

I'm originally from Ventura, California where I grew up during the 50s and 60s. My wife Janet and I were married while I was attending UCLA and she was attending nursing school. We immediately started having children and had three boys and a girl by the time I graduated from SMU Law School. With four young children we decided to stay in Dallas, where we had family and friends, rather than returning to California. I started law practice in the late 70's and today practice consumer law with my son, Jim. About twelve years ago I took on a famous romance author as a client and, after working with her for a while, I started wondering if I could write a novel myself. Eventually I gave it a shot and found I really enjoyed the writing process. After that it only took a few generous reviews of my first novel and I was hooked. My current novel, Tarizon: Civil War is my fourteenth and my goal is to continue to write a novel a year for the rest of my life.

Brash Endeavor is an intriqing story of a young lawyer, Stan Turner, who has made some wrong choices. He is faced with his wife's arrest for the murder of a woman Turner almost had an affair with. To complicate matters, Turner is left holding the bag on a land scam. In addition, he's receiving calls from a dead woman asking for help. What else can go wrong for Turner? Read this fascinating story packed with surprises. Overall, a good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent story; Stan Turner is a likable character., May 17, 1999

This review is from: Brash Endeavor: A Stan Turner Mystery (Stan Turner Mysteries) (Volume 3) (Paperback)
This was my first Stan Turner mystery, but it won't be my last. The story unfolded realistically and the suspense built, as it should, with plenty of unexexpected twists. Just as I figured out what would happen next, the author surprised me. The Texas setting made me feel right at home--even though I've never seen an oil well come in. It's also nice to know there are some lawyers who care more about clients than about money. I intend to start with the first book in the series and catch up before the next book is published. Stan Turner, as a naive lawyer at the beginning of his career is believable, likable, and worth looking in on again...and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Manchee has my loyalty as a reader., January 8, 1999

This review is from: Brash Endeavor: A Stan Turner Mystery (Stan Turner Mysteries) (Volume 3) (Paperback)
When I was first given a copy of Undaunted, another Stan Turner mystery also written by William Manchee, I put it aside - I'm not a reader. The day came when I had nothing else to do (I was working switchboard) so I picked it up and began to read. I was immediately drawn into the characters' worlds and found myself unable to put the book down until I knew what happened to everyone! The only bad part to the book was that there was no more to read. I wanted to know where these characters's lives would take them in the future. Then, I was given a copy of Brash Endeavor! Mr. Manchee knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat. Brash Endeavor is the continuing story of Stan Turner's life as a lawyer in Dallas, Texas. In both books, Stan Turner seems to attract trouble, and many times, unusually good fortune. Mr. Manchee has a way of making you seem like you're there in the story . . . and I'm already trying to find out if there is another Stan Turner Mystery in the book stores. Mr. Manchee has my loyalty as a reader and I hope he continues to write more of the Stan Turner mystery books.
