5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Brazilian music, February 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Brasilian Serenata (Audio CD)
Who says you can't judge a book by its cover? I bought Brasilian Serenata at a used record store several years ago, simply because I love Brazilian music and I liked the artwork on the album cover. I didn't even know who Dori Caymmi was. Much to my delight, the music inside is every bit as sensual and lush as the artwork on the cover. Dori Caymmi is as well known to Brazilian music as many of his contemporaries including Djavan, Milton Nacimento, and Ivan Lins. His voice is deep and rich and is the perfect complement to his guitar style. I love this tape. It's one that I play over and over until I can't stand to listen to it anymore, only to return to it months later to repeat the cycle. If you select it, I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I have over the past years.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lasting joy, June 17, 2004

This review is from: Brasilian Serenata (Audio CD)
I'm floored that this classic CD has received only one previous review. I've owned it since it was first released, and I still return to it regulary for calm joy, for stimulating relaxation, for plain good music. Dori is a great arranger (Sarah Vaughn), songwriter (Like A Lover), guitar player, and singer. On this CD he adds excellent LA studio jazz musicians (some Brazilians themselves) and at least one song by his father (I'm writing this off the cuff, without look at the liner notes.) These elements are mixed by the rhythms of samba, and as he says in "Colors" "Colors run together become as one." This CD may be his best (or maybe "Kicking Cans"), and it's accessible, with no esoteric knowledge of Brazilian music needed to enjoy it.
