First time on CD for this 1972 album from the Jazz trumpeter joined by Henry Mancini. Doc Severinsen is best known as the band leader for the Tonight Show during Johnny Carson's tenure, from 1967-1992. He issued a number of highly regarded trumpet albums over those years. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

I had this album in 4-channel stereo long ago and loved it.
Doc's flugelhorn playing is very elegant and restrained (when you know how he could have picked up his trumpet and soared at any time).
He takes a simple melody and adds just the right nuance and ornaments to make it completely original and fresh.
Hank Mancini's arrangements are pure and solid - there will never be another like him - love his use of the horn and trombone sections laying down that rich pad of sound for the solos.
The song choices bring back great memories - the Carpenter's 'Sometimes'

My parents purchased the LP in the early 70's. Little did they know at that time how this album would occupy so much listening time over the years for me.

Doc's playing is so mellow yet quite restrained with hardly any technical virtuosity...which is why I've always enjoyed this album so much. I feel as if the playing really comes from the heart.

Mancini's gift for melody has always amazed me. The title cut to this album "Brass of Ivory" is a great example of what melodic composing is all about. I miss Henry a lot.

One of the most tasteful albums I've ever owned.

Soft rainy day, light the fire and turn off the lights. Back in the 70's I borrowed the LP (that's what we used to call records)of this title from a friend. It was scratched and full of "pops" when played. But even then I loved it. I have been looking for years for a CD of this album and, WaLa! there it was. I realize music is a matter of taste but this is up there as one of my favorites.
