4.0 out of 5 stars Wlliams Fairey Band Scores A Hit, July 27, 2001
By
This review is from: Brass from the Masters, Vol. 1 (Audio CD)
The talents of the Williams Fairey Band is truly heard in Brass from the Masters. Of special significance to their talents, is the Severn Suite, by Edward Elgar. The melodic lines spotlighted in the high brass in the opening of the "Cathedral" is quickly answered by the middle and low voices. The work's rhythmic and variety of tempi and form spotlights well the unique talents of this wonderful brass ensemble. This CD is a must have for conissieurs of Brass Ensemble music, I highly

recommend it.

I happened upon a CD, Volume #2 from this brass group, as I looked over used CD's in a thrift shop. I bought it, never having heard of the performers. It was outstanding! So I ordered their Volume #1 CD from Amazon. It took a while to get it from England but Wow! Even more so!
This British group is a brass wind ensemble, large enough to put out great volume, small enough to nuance their sound and effect their interpretation with finesse. You'll love their artistry, their traditional singing/legato style - typical of English players, and some of the most rapid brass tonguing ensemble passages I've ever heard from any group of brass players.
(BTW, Volume #2, it turns out, is out of print but downloadable via Amazon. I recommend adding both CD's to your musical library.)

If you enjoy brass bands, the Williams Fairey Band is not a secret to you. Only interested in beautiful and somewhat exciting music this is for you. Wonderful pieces by some of the best composers of the genre, superb technique, great musianship, great depth of sound and accurate intonation will keep you coming back to this cd. With repeated listenings at different volumes it reveals many of the intricacies hidden within the works. A great cd to introduce those new to the world of brass bands
