Book Description

September 23, 2002 6 and up1 and up
The Israelites wandering the desert complain to Moses and refuse to listen to God. God sends a plague of snakes to attack the people. When Moses pleads with God to have mercy, He sends Moses a Brass Snake which Moses lifts on his staff. All those who look at the snake are healed; those who refuse to do so, die. The scales of the snake are used for the Temple doors a thousand years later.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

1) This is the only book for children that traces and explains the origin of the symbol used by physicians and hospitals the world over – a staff with a snake curled around it. 2) Reveals an important element of the power of healing: that the snake that destroys can also become the snake that heals, if man wills it.

About the Author

Eric Kimmel has written over 35 children's tales, including Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins which won a Caldecott Honor Award. He also wrote Why The Snake Crawls On Its Belly. While the author has written many books based on tales of the Far East and Russia, the titles with which he has won awards have invariably been of Jewish interest and reflect his affinity for his roots.

This review is from: The Brass Serpent (Hardcover)
The online description indicates that the story is scriptural; it is loosely and not entirely correctly based on scripture. Numbers 21 states that in response to the people's complaints and disobedience, "the Lord sent venomous snakes among them". This contrasts to the Kimmel version in which the snakes were knowingly waiting for the cloud, with which God surrounded Israel, to be lifted so they could attack. Big difference between God's intention and snakes intention! Really too bad, since the story is a foreshadowing of the lifting up of Jesus on the cross to save us from our sins/eternal health and not just the first use of a snake to be associated with physical health/hippocratic oath. Perhaps there are other versions in which the snakes are supposed to have this knowledge about the Israelites?

This review is from: The Brass Serpent (Paperback)
Also available in a hardcover format, The Brass Serpent by Eric A. Kimmel is a simple yet vibrant color picture book presenting the biblical Old Testament tale of Moses, and how the brass serpent came to be the sigil of healing. Emphasizing the moral of God's immense power, and the need to trust Him when sickness strikes, The Brass Serpent is colorfully illustrated by Joanna Miller and a very highly recommended picture book story for young readers ages 6 to 9.
