Bigger menace than militant Japan? That is the label given to one child in a far British fortress on the eve of World War 2. The Colonel trembles with rage, the nuns pray, while Charlie innocently battles Life's monsters and strives to understand that peculiar species, the Adult.

5.0 out of 5 stars The oddity of adults July 30, 2012
By Cathy
Format:Paperback
I like the way this kid exposes the pomp of the British Raj at its peak. The action takes place in Ceylon, now called Srilanka, on the eve of World War 2. Each chapter poses a new lesson of Life for young Charlie, and his antics are original and funny. There is also nostalgia involving a social niche in the days when Britain ruled the world. A literary gem? Maybe. A darn happy read? For sure.
